Hi,
I am a absolute new beginner in the area of PS2.
My question is about the possibility to attach a hard disk to my sons PS2 with the purpose to install games on the hard disk.
Our intention is to install all the game that we have bought so far, however I am pretty shore that he/we/I also will try to download games for installation on the hard drive. My questions are following:
1) Can I connect any kind of external hard disk to the PS2 console
or
2) Do I need a special kind of external hard disk to the PS2 console
or
3) Do I need a special kind of "build-in" hard disk to the PS2 console.
To attach an external or "build-in" hard disk, do I need to fiddle more with the PS2 console?
I am pretty shore that my questions are very basic so if there is any URL that answer these and other basic question, please get back with the URL.

If you have a FAT PS2, you can install an IDE hdd inside the back bay on the PS2 using a PS2 Network Adaptor.
Also on a FAT PS2 you can connect an external USB hdd, for example a WD MyBook 1TB is what I use.
For external hdd, its always recommended to use on that has its own power adapter (wall plugin)
On a slim, you can only connect an external USB hdd, unless you have a V12-V13 Slim, which you can connect an IDE hdd, but you would need to purchase HDD COmbo or XCM HD connect.
It is actually simpler and cheaper just to go with an EXternal Hdd.
Next you need to use some sort of mod or software ( modchip, fmcb 1.8, Swap Magic etc) in order to be able to play backups from the USB drive.
The PS2 itself will not recognize the USB drive.
