Hello everyone, I'm having a dilemna with my slim PS2 as to where it's only playing blue discs and audio cds. DVD movies, backed up PS2 games, nor origial PS2 games will play with me getting the disc read error. I've looked all over the forums for an answer and I've seen the same question being raised but no response. They were old posts and hopefully someone has an answer to this by now.

The PS2 has TWO lasers. One for reading CD and one for DVD.

The DVD laser is faulty or needs adjustment.

Do a google search for PS2 Laser adjustment. Cleaning the lens can work too, but I assume you've already done that.

Yeah, I tried cleaning the lens with a cleaner disc and it didn't work. I then cleaned it manually with alcohol and a Q tip...no response. I was about to try and accept the fact that it was time to get another one but I had one more thing to try. I went into the screen with the version information, clicked on console and turned the diagnosis option on. Then I went into the browser screen with there being nothing but the image of my memory card. I then stuck a game in and when the ps2 started reading it, an image of the disk showed up!! I clicked into it and the game played fine!!

At first I couldn't get a game to play unless I turned the diagnosis option on, it kept resetting itself to off each time I turned the system off. I'd say after 3 times of using the diagnosis feature, the console now loads games as if it was fresh out the box! Games that normally wouldn't load way before I even started having that problem are now playable!! Cool beans......there is a God
