Sorry for the noobish questions, first time owning a PS2 believe it or not. I got a Model 30001 from a friend, it read the games alright when I bought it from him, video didnt skip or anything weird, so we assumed it worked alright. It has a modchip but I cant tell what it is. The Ps2 has a switch on the back, the instructions I got from my friend was to swich it on when playing games and off while watching movies. I already searched, it is not an Sbox. If you can tell me what it is, would be greatly appreciated.
So anyways.
I downloaded and burned the game Legend Of Spyro: Dawn Of The Dragon in a verbatim dvd-r at 2x and it played alright, played the game for like 19 hours according to the savestate, 4 long sessions of gameplay and beat it to 100%, console worked fine all the time.
But then I downloaded and burned Legend Of Spyro: The Eternal Night to a verbatim dvd-r at 2x and then the PS2 wont read it, it takes me to the navigation screen, it says "Reading Disk" and then would give me a "Disk Error". Alright I reset the console, clean the disk, try and see if the PC can read the data (it could) but then the PS2 didnt read it. I gave up and tried to play Dawn Of The Dragon again but then it tells me to insert a Ps1 or ps2 format disk... reset, clean, like 10 times until it finally read the game, but right now it is reading the game whenever it wants. No lags or skipping during gameplay though.
Do you think it is a laser fault, chip fault or something else?
Got one of those "CD laser lens cleaner disks" from philips, heard it can scratch the lens but could never find out if that was true or not. So, if anyone can ensure the CD is not going to mess up the lens, I will do that right away.
About the laser, I searched for it for model 30001, and they ask me 100 us dollars or around that price. I was wondering if you knew somewhere to get one at a better price (Not Ebay), I heard they are not being manufactured anymore, so Sony is out of question I think.
So anyways I tried doing as you said and it worked alright at first try. Game is half beat already but there is a level it slows down and looks as if it was slow motion, either the PS2 can't handle it's "greatness" or lack of, or disk is not being read well. There are some games that slow down at certain parts right?

No problem, you just want to take your time if you do ever do it, or find someone who is experienced at it.
Also if you do buy a laser, the new laser has anti static points on it, which require one to desolder before you use it.
You can ask the retailer to do it for you before they send it.
