I have a fat ps2 and just installed a 100 gig Maxtor hard drive. My system has not been modded in any other way. I need to format it but my kids got into my cds and dvds and scrached most of them. I have Action replay max, game shark, and spark magic but due to scratches the ps2 keeps telling me my disk isn't ps2 compatible but when I put them in my pc I have no issue reading the files and even making a backup which is useless without modding my system. Is there another way to format my hard drive with my pc or anything else. I just want the games I have on the hard drive to preserve my disks that are still good for my kids. I'm not rich enough to just go out and replace the disks to format without saving for a while. I also tried the 3 programs on 6 other ps2's 3 were new and It does the same thing. Any help or info would be greatly appreciated.

you can use winhiip to format the drive and load the games to the hard drive from the pc. you will still need a way of booting the hdloader program such as a working cheat disc or swap magic. this would only mean you have to obtain one disc instead of replacing your entire collection. once you have a cheat disc or swap magic, just follow the guides for installing fmcb on your memory card.

Thanks for the info. I'm assuming swap magic is the best option. I'm going to try resurfacing my disk first then if its a no go I'll have to get a new one. At least I know I can stop searching the web with all my free time for other Ideas.

since you having to buy a disc. i would would buy whatever is the cheapest. you will only use it once to install the hack on the memory card. once you have free mcboot installed you will have a new menu on the ps2 where you can boot directly into hdloader to play the games from the hard drive

I tried resurfacing which didn't work. Swap magic seems to be the cheapest. Game Shark and action replay range from $50 to $100 on ebay and are not making them anymore. Swap magic is $54 with a new flip top for the fat or 27 for the disks with the slide tool plus its new. Do I need the flip top if I want to play my backups to or can I just use the memory card exploit. I've read somewhere that swap magic is hard on the eye. Thanks again for the info.

the only reason to get the flip top is for playing games off of a disc. it you look at sksapps.com they have a list of which games are compatible with hdloader. most are. and also if you have any games that need to be played on disc you can patch the game iso with esr patcher and then run the game from the esr program that gets installed on your memory card with everything else. with that option i wouldnt bother with the flip top.

Here is some tutorials on how to install free mcboot. And if you want to use ESR, here is one of my videos. I have a slim so I'm not very sure about HD Loader. But you can use OpenPS2Loader to play games off a usb hard drive.
Toshiba Satellite a665 16.5" laptop - Intel i3 - 4gb RAM - 500 gb HDD
PS3 Slim 320GB HDD 3.41 OFW
PS2 Slim SCPH-70012 - Free McBoot 1.8 - 128MB Memory Card
PSP 3001 Silver - Custom Firmware 5.03 GEN-C - 8GB Sony Memory Stick
iPod Touch 2g - 8gb - MC version - Jailbroken

Thanks for the info. I have a slim ps2 also but figured The fat was easier to play around with and like the ability of installing a hard drive. I have many memory cards So In the end I'll be exploiting both. one for here and the other for at his grandparents. I have a 1 tb usb hard drive but I'm not sure If that's to big to work. Swap magic should be here in a couple days and I'll post my results.

I got my hard drive formated and installed free boot mc on my memory card but I cant get the ps2 to run the games from the hard drive. The same games I can run from a backup disk. my question now is how do I know which mode 1 - 4 to select when adding games with WinHIIP to the hard drive? I think this is my problem but I'm not sure. any info would be greatly appreciated or a like to a good video that explains adding games through a pc. out of 25 games I installed only Medal of honor European assault started to boot but then froze after starting to load new game. Also should the hard drive games be patched or not? thank you for your time.
edit: I found a link on this forum site but my pc says the link appears to be broken.

over at sksapps.com, go to the ps2 section then list. it is a list that explains if there is any compatiblity modes needed for individual games. there are a very few games that need patching the patches are in the hdd section. once you've got that sqared away you should just start hdloader a select the game you want to play. on the games you've already installed if any of them need any compatibilty modes to work, you don't need to reinstall them, just highlight the game then hit select and it will let you change the compatiblity modes.

Thanks for the info. I know I have the right mode setup for each game now but I still have the same results. I get a black screen on every game that I try to load except for medal of honor games. they will load and let me select new game then they freeze. All the games I loaded to the hard drive are on the fully compatible list and I'm using the original hdloader. They all work burned to a disk though. I dont know if I have a configuration issue or would a patched game cause an issue if it didnt need to be? I know not all of them are patched though. thanks I would never have goten this far without the help of this forum and the people here.

I finally got it working not sure what I did but after changing some ulaunch settings to run a ps1 backup the games on the hard drive just started working. There's still a bunch of stuff I don't understand about the mc exploit and the new menu but I'm figuring it out. Thanks for the help everyone. I wouldn't have even got through the first step of the process. I do a lot of atari hacking and dumping roms if anyone is interested. I have a 7800dev system to.
