Hi, I have a slimline PS2 and it just stopped reading discs today. I was in the middle of playing a burnt game, and it just froze. Now it won't read any discs (PSX, burnt, PS2). When I turn on the ps2, the process it follows is like this:

~Laser moves forward, then back a tiny bit
~Laser flashes red once, then starts focusing up and down
~Disc starts spinning*
~Laser turns red and keeps focusing up and down
~Disc cannot be read, so it goes to the browser/dashboard.

*When the disc spins, it spins for like a second, the stops, then spins for another second, then stops again, and this process continues over and over again.

Anyone know what problem I have?

Have you tried cleaning the lens? I usually just use a maxwell dvd lens cleaner. Rubbing alcohol annd qtips also works. Many guides/walk-throughs on that..

Hmm, I'm actually not sure where I could even buy rubbing alcohol, never used it in my life. It's a long shot, but do you think hydrogen peroxide would work? If not, is there anything else (preferebly something from around the house) that would work?

i wouldn't use hyydrogen peroxide.methalated spirits should work.Any alcohol based cleaner should work.

Alright, I tried that and still nothing. Apparently while trying to read the disc it makes a series of 4 short scraping/screeching noises then pauses, then does it again ect...
Does that help at all?

the 4 scrapping noises would be the laser trying to read the disk.it will try a few times.how old is your PS2????does the laser read any disks at all????sounds like your laser is dead.

Well, it's a year and a half old, and it's a slimline. And no, it will not read any discs. Is there a surefire way to tell if the laser is dead, because I'd hate to replace to find out it was something else. Also, the laser does turn red, and I can see it through the disc (little red dot on top of the disc) so wouldn't that mean it's not dead, or am I missing something?

if you know someone that works with playstations personally you might be able to get them to have open it up and have a look. You might even be able to contact sony direct and get them to have a look at it.Generally if the laser won't read any disks it is a problem with the laser on the other hand it could be a loose wire or the calibration could be out.theres no real way of knowing unless you or someone you know takes the PS2 apart and has a look.

Alright, well I could take it apart myself as I'm pretty good with kind of stuff, what should I look for?

I wouldn't use metho, as it contains things that leave a residue on laser, Isoproponal ALCOHOL IS BEST. No residue, and cleans very well.
