**Think I solved it. It seems I have to take the power plug and stuff out of the PS2 for about 5 minutes or so, put Swap magic in, put the power back in and switch on, swap, and it works~ Does anyone else know of people having to do this?**
-Yeah, I know it looks a long post, Im thinking the problem might be something small and easy to miss, sorry!-
EDIT PLEASE READ: I got it working a little while after I made this post...AFTER I put my memory card in, and then switched it on. (With Swap magic dvd in and the lid closed, opened and swapped quickly, closed it, pressed x - and walah! ) So: Do I have to have my memory card in whenever I go on? It does say on the back "Can launch program from memory card) but it says "can", not making it compulsorary...or is it?
Yet another edit: Ok, I switched it off, then went to test it to see if I could make it play again - its doing that "lens goes back and forth" thing a LOT more than last time. And whenever its gone blank several times when I load swap magic. It repeats the lens reading the disc sound, then a very quiet grinding - its scaring me. Is it 'cuz I havent put the last 3 screws back, or...? (Sorry for all these questions...) Oh, and even when I get swap magic working, I open it, and the lens goes back and forth, so it messes it up. I know Ive got the switch taped down properly...maybe I should be gentle when both opening and closing the lid? I really dont wanna have to open it up again...wah...
Edit: Forgot to say: I have checked around but cant find anything relating to my problem. Sorry if Im breaking the rules in anyway >_<
Another edit...yeah...: You can prolly disregard the following, I dunno. I think the reason my lens kept moving back and forth is 'cuz the paper covering the first sensor went outta place. I re-adjusted it (Tho a little paper went inside the ps2 - that wont cause any damage, will it??), put some insulating/electrical tape over it, and the lens is staying in the right place (The "tricked" position). My problem now is just swap magic not loading the original import disc. ("Not a valid ps2 disc") Is it to do with when the lid is open and closed? Im really stuck with this...And I have an idea of a place that may mod it if I absolutely cannot get this working (Ghost2fitters I think they're called). But can anyone see anything that Im doing wrong?
Hi there~ My names in this post to the left somewhere. Nice to meet'cha ^_^ And Im sorry if I come off as n00bish. Im going to put as much detail into this post as I can, just 'cuz it might be something real specific. Sorry if its needless info at times, I will make my question clear... Now, my weird problem:
I am a total n00b to everything about this forum. But it has helped me out with stuff about Swap magic, and the tools, and given me some good advice - thanks~
So, I'd say about 2 months ago, I got swap magic 3.6 PAL(Off of memtechsolutions :O ). Eventually, I braved doing the straw mod. The first two Im pretty sure ok. (Please dont ask for pics, I havent got a decent camera to do all that on my computer) The third one was a total hassle. Eventually, I got the straw in the right place.
I have a slimline PAL PS2, 75003, is that the v14? And for the record I DONT use back-ups. I have no idea, and I dont want to use 'em. I live in the UK - a particularly JRPG-starved place. I bought NTSC Tales of the Abyss. So, I got to the loading screen, and had to mess around for ages (Cant remember what I did.. ) and eventually got it working! I played it for a few minutes (It was really late...) then turned off. Next day, the straw seemed to have come out of place. After hours of messing, I got it back in. Then it wouldnt load it at swap magic. It kept spinning, stopping, and saying "Not a valid PS2 disc" Yay... I wondered if it were to do with when you open and close the lid (After watching this one vid on youtube). I put in Swap Magic (DVD. Remember - Im importing) closed it, switched it on, went to the loading bit. Switched Tales of the Abyss in, closed it, pressed x, and whaddaya know - it works! So, I got to play 4 and a half hours of Tales of the Abyss which I really enjoyed. The next day - didnt work. Straw had come out AGAIN. Just today I finally decided to brave opening my PS2 (The warranty must've gone AGES ago, its pre-owned and Ive had it for 2 or 3 years). I found that little switch - but there was no beige thing on it as has been described to me before. Just a tiny black thing that I push (It was definitely the right switch...) I managed to put some duct tape over it, made sure it was down, then closed it up again. And my PS2 has been tricked. So, thinking it worked, I put in Swap magic, swapped to TotA, pressed go aaaaaand...."Not a valid PS2 disc." uh...yay? After messing with it, I found that when I left it open, after awhile the lens would go back, then come forward again (It looked confused XD). I opened it up again, and the switch was defnitely down! But I stuck some electrical/insulating tape over it just in case. Then I put a straw in, made sure it was covering over the switch - it might help... I put it back together - all except 3 screws, just in case I had to open it AGAIN. Put swap magic in, closed it, went onto loading screen, swapped to TotA - nada. "Not a valid ps2 disc". After awhile of messing (By which I mean loading it again, changing when I open or close the lid.) if I left it open at the Swap magic load screen and am not quick when I swap, the lens moves back and forth - acts confused again. If I open it carefully it doesnt do it as much, and it helps if swap and close quickly. (It doesnt go back, so the TOC message doesnt appear.) Yet it still tells me "Not a valid ps2 disc". ARGH. Twice I got it to load onto a blank screen but still...
I belive it still works with normal PAL games by itself. (It did last time I checked...)
Questions:
Could it be to do with when Im opening and closing the lid? If so, how do I do that?
Is my PS2 just messed up? Anything I can do, or do I need to get another? ( ;_; )
Is my Swap magic 3.6 just messed up? Will I need to purchase it again? (Keep in mind that Ive got it working several times before).
Should I put all the screws back?
Is there anything Ive listed that I may have been doing wrong?
Or anything I havent?
I really need help with this - Its so frustrating!
Thanks if you've read this far! Appreciate it ^^ So, can anyone help?
Thanks!

did you get all 3 sensors down? There is one on your cover, the one that rubs against the disk (you can push that to the right and tighten the screw a bit to take care of that one) then the one on the back of the power buttons circut. and the one in the way way back, down below.
I didn't remember reading that you have FreeMcBoot. I know that when i have that on there, i have to unplug my USB and MC sometimes in order for it to work.

Thanks for the reply ^^
Yes, I found that the reason the lens had been messing about is because I didnt have the 1st sensor down right. The disc breaker is half back, but it doesnt touch the disc, so I dont think it matters.
FreeMcBoot? Ive never heard of that...What is it? (^^; ) Well, whenever I take the power out and leave it for awhile, it makes it more likely for swap magic to load the game (I found the other day that taking the power out for 5 minutes or so wont necessarily make it play the game -_-; ). I really am having the idea of my Swap magic discs being faulty as the problem (There are small scratches on it, if I look carefully...) Thanks again ^^

Swap Magic discs can be faulty and many have sent back for replacement.
I know I had to with my SM DVD
But if you don't have sensors in place properly, it won't work
Good pics here - http://www.geocities.com/pstwoslimline/tapetissue.htm
Yes you have a V14, that is what I have also.
It is best just to tape the sensor down underneath, and make sure by the 'reset button' is properly placed.
If you can open the PS2, while an original disc is playing, you have everything in place properly.
If your imports don't work, you may have to use 'imgburn' to back up the disc to ISO image, then burn the ISO image with imgburn at 4x or 8x speed.
I know you say you don't want to play backups, but with Swap Magic and some imports, that is the best way to play them.

Ah, yeah, Ive defnitely got the sensors down in the right place, but those pics confirm it. And I can play with the lid open. So I am now confident its not to do with my PS2 being taped down or not...
And there are little sorta scratches and marks on my SM DVD disc...I hear that can affect it...Im trying to get Swap magic coder at the moment, just 'cuz it'd be new, and its the upgrade XD
As for the import, it does work, but not always. Not that it crashes in the middle of the actual game, just Swap magic doesnt seem to feel like loading it >.>;
So, I get the impression when you close and open the lid, doesnt have much effect? ^^;
So, is "imgburn" a seperate program I'd have to download?

Yes imgburn is a free software burning program.
It is great for PS2, Wii backups and what most use.

Alrighty then, I'll keep that in mind, thanks ^^
Um, I am getting worried tho: Swap magic isnt JUST for back-ups, is it?? I know the use of back-ups (In case the original gets broken and all that) but I keep seeing people always talk about back-ups, but Swap magic says you can use it with imports... Or am I just thinking to much? xD;

Yes you can use it with imports also. I usually just back up the import then play it with the Swap Magic, or now of course I just use fmcb 1.8 and esr to play the backups of any region.
