I have a phat ps2 and I want to know how to make my ps2 read backup copies. I do not intend on using a modchip. I do not want to buy the swapmagic package. Is there a way where I can just use my memory card or something. I just bought a phat ps2 and I don't have anything but the console, controller, sony memory card, couple of games, and wires.

Unfortunately you will need to buy something. If you listed all that you have, you are lacking essential tools. Now to answer your question, there is a way to softmod your memory card to play backups with ease. However you need the tools to do so. It would require the use of a PS2 cheat device (Codebreaker, ARMax, Gameshark 2...). Pretty much any way you look at it, you're gonna have to make a purchase, unless you borrow a cheat disc from somebody (one time use to install memory card exploit). If you can get your hands on one of these disc, let me know here, and I'll point you in the right direction.

Here are the options I know of with Swap Magic and their requirements:

Version 3.3 or lower:
Swap Magic CD version
Free Memory Card Boot
Pre-configured boot dic
Swap Magic slide card (can be easily made if needed)
Burning program (Alcohol 120%, Nero...)
UltraISO
Winrar

Version 3.6 or higher:
Swap Magic (either version I believe)
USB storage device

The first one is tedious work that takes some time and effort, and a lot of hunting for live links to the stuff you need to dl off the net. The second one is quick simple and easy. Also, I've heard that 3.3 or lower can also have a DVD created to install .elfs. This would be even more tedious than the CD way, cause I don't know of a preconfigured dvd image available for dl on the net. To my knowledge this should work with all PS2s.
