We're older and so most of the DVDs in our collection are oldeer and I've always been able to use "Shrink" for our backups but my son knew I grew up as a Trek fan and he gave us latest S.Trek.
Shrink couldn't back it up and older version of Fab couldn't do it so as other posters suggested I simply downloaded the latest free version of Fab/Decrypter and I made no changes in the settings of the application and it just did the backup.
Someone asked why not just use dual layer media? Maybe our eyes are old but when using a good up converting player we can't see much difference between the original dual-layer disc image and the "shrunk" back up disc. Base quality of standard def. dvd is mpeg2 and that's probably why original versus "shrunk" look about the same - we find this to be visually true even comparing 110in. plus diagonal images using our projector.
For a not so technical old duffer like me latest Fab made the back up I needed for a camping trip pretty simple.

So the difference is in the quality of the dvd? Do they sell dual DVD blanks-- and can I download the newest DVD/Decepter free if I do not have blue ray on my computer?
thanks

I downloaded the DVD Fab 6 and have tried and tried and even tried to read the tutorial. After I do the DVD to DVD full disk-- how do I get it to go to a blank disc?
thanks

If you want it to fit on a single layer disk you need to use DVD Shrink to shrink it to a 4.3 GB file also freeware and then I use Nero9 to burn the shrunken file to disc. Fab and Shrink are just Rippers they do not burn to disk.

If you don't have Nero, then you can burn files with ImgBurn-free.
Imgburn-
http://www.imgburn.com
If you have Nero Suite, you can use Nero Recode and it will shrink the DL file down and burn it on a SL DVD all in one step.

thanks-- I will continue to try with DVD Shrink (sometimes it works and some times it doesn"t) I have DVD decrypter. Is it the same as ImgBurn?
If Fab is a ripper- what is a ripper?
thanks

DVDFab free is mainly a ripper-bought version will do most anything
ImgBurn is the update to Decrypter without the ablity to open a disc without help(anydvd)Keep em both around. But burn with ImgBurn instead of Decrypter.

Sorry I didn't answer your question about "what a ripper is." A ripper is a program that will rip (copy) the files off the disc and onto the hard drive. The two best rippers are free DVDFab and paid AnyDVD. Decrypter was great in it's time as was DVD X Copy for early ripping but they are gone and not updated anymore.
AnyDVD just running will let programs like DVD Decrypter, Nero Reocode and Shrink to rip the files themselves on newer movies.

Hi all, I have followed this for some time but have never posted.
I am trying to create a backup of star trek using anydvd 6.6.0.3.
I normally find the .vob files and copy them and convert to mpeg2 so i get a lossless conversion. My question is how do I complete something to that effect with how fragmented the Video_TS files are... I cant find the correct ones. Really confusing me. It is important to me to keep the lossless video conversion here..
any insiight or help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
Bill

Well, it seems that you can't talk about ST-XI/2009 anywhere but here, but then again, I'm not doing any of the following:
1. Making a back-up
2. using DVD shrink
3. using worthless DVD-FAB Decrypter which creates time-code corrupt Audio/Video desync'd VOB files almost every time.
I use the good 'ole DVD-Decrypter and convert the VOB files to DivX/mpeg4-H263 using DivX Author or Virtual Dub with mpeg2 decoder plug-in installed.
So I guess I can't post anywhere.
Here's the deal. The DVD producers are using all sorts of gimmicks to try to prevent DVD ripping tools from working. Things like fake VTS's, bogus PGC's and superfluous unreadable/bad cells.
I overcome this by:
1. playing the DVD normally in a player which will show me the final run-time or TRUE movie run-time.
2. Fire up DVD Decrypter and set "MODE" to "IFO I" and "file splitting" to: "by VOB ID".
3. Use the true run-time discovered in STEP 1, to find the real VTS.
4. Eliminate bad cells (usually found in chapter 1, also near middle but sometimes all over the place). I uncheck small cells and decrypt one chapter at a time to discover additional bad cells.
NOTE: You'll need to hit the partially obscured "Rename" button in "Do you want to overwrite existing file?" dialog box.
So here's the formula for DVD Decrypter:
Use VTS 09 & PGC 01 since the TRUE run-time is 2:06:46
Chapter 1, uncheck bad cells 1-8
Remaining Chapters have no bad cells, so you can rip them all at once.

@fwopow
Or you could spring for AnyDVD and start the program of your choice to recode and burn the dvd and push one burn button and come back in 20min or less and have a perfectly good backup of what ever the dvd of choice is.
If you can afford the pc you have in your sig, you can afford AnyDVD and save yourself some time for life's other pleasures. LOL :)

Maybe I'll take a look at it, but I don't burn DVD's.
Fiddling around with disks is quaint and old fashioned. I have everything on a hard-drive hooked up to my Philips DVD player with USB input.
This way, any title in my collection is selectable by remote control from my easy chair.
All the set & forget software I've tried, blows it in the auto-decision making dept. and I don't get the final result that I'm looking for.
Thanks for the suggestion though. Someday if I find time I might take a closer look at AnyDvd's features.

DVDFab will also burn the data once it is ripped...I've typically used it in the past until they couldn't keep up with the recent encryption changes as much as anydvd has.

On Shrink:
Re-Autor > Compression Settings > Custom Ratio..... to compress around 4,300MB if you want to use a DVD 5 Blank Disc as a back-up burn.
Read your Shrink Guide.
