If it is a 2001 series then it is modable. Take out the battery and look at the sticker inside (not the sticker on the battery but inside the battery bay on the PSP). If it says 2001 as model# then it is modable.

First of all thanks for the great guide Larry.
I have read all of the pages of this post and find it scary that people who obviously can't read (or choose not to read) and don't know what a .rar file is or the difference between OFW and CFW are happy to 'try' and convert the FW to CFW without any understanding of what they are doing or the 'potential' risks they are taking.
I am a total noob when it comes to PSP (main interests are Amateur Radio, FSTV and PIC micros) and sadly :-( own a slim which was delivered with OFW 4.01 so almost certainly a 88-V3 mobo. What I have done though is read a lot :-). Some guides and ideas are good some, not so good. This one is by far the best as long as you read it !!
If and when there is a method of converting my PSP to CFW for homebrew I will be happier but for now quite happy learning :-)
Enough of my ranting (especially in my 1st post)
Cheers
Dave
P.S. Just noticed that the link for part 1 (Mediafire) is a 0 byte file (not good) trying Rapidshare now

you do NOT run any programs on official firmware. you need to either hardmod your battery, or buy a datel TOOL battery. softmod is not an option.

if it's a psp slim with 4.01 out of the box, you're stuck. it will have the ta-088v3 mobo. unflashable.

ps2: v7 scph-39001 - independence exploit - hdloader 0.8c - maxtor 300gb hdd
(+[__]%) psp slim ta-085v1: 6.60 PRO B10
wii (powered by bootmii/priiloader): 4.1u - d2x v10beta53-alt (base 56) - configurable usb loader v70r51/devolution r188 - wd scorpio black 7200rpm 320gig w/ ams venus ds2 enclosure

got a whole lot more to list . . .

Wonderful guide! (I actually joined the forum just so I could could say this.)

Recently used my PSP Slim (3.71 m33-2) to help make a friends PSP fat able to run home brew. Your guide was a huge help in making me feel comfortable with the entire process.

Thanks for putting so much time into it!

Ok i got a psp 4 £10 knowing that its faulty as the seller said himself, after researching on the net, i found out that the psp is 'fully bricked' i.e the power light comes on, and goes off after couple of seconds. Psp screen blank. Further research i find out that its fixable with a 'pandora battery', i get hold of one from amazon, along with a 8gb memorystick pro duo. I followed the great guide by 'larry' i make a perfect memory card, i pop it in the psp with the pandora battery, this time the lights stays on, unless u manually off it. But no pandora menu comes up? Wot did i do wrong, i sure that software works on any firmware custom or official as it said. i am begining to think that the 8gb memory card dont work with the software as nothing comes up nor does the memory card light flash, so shall i try different one? (remenber i cant do anything with the psp, as it dnt switch on, also i am using a PHAT PSP-1000) Someone PLEASE help me

8gb is too big, needs to be between 256mb and 4gb!

I have used 8gb with this guide and it worked fine.

He needs to follow the troubleshooting guide, thereby meaning to try other memory cards if that doesn't work.
Keep in mind this psp you purchased could have other problems also.

Some Fake ones have worked. It has been tested. Just don't count on it.
It is better to have Original, so don't buy off Ebay especially Hong Kong or China.

Its as easy as it gets. PSX emulator is integral part of FW, you just need to convert it with PSX2PSP... here's great guide on forum, so check it out. Also, you might wanna install POPSloader, which allows you to use the emulator engine (pops) from different firmwares for added compatibility.

Sorry for OT.
