The Xtractor pro is cheaper (even with the spear). Plus if you are in the US, you can get fast shipping.

What DVD drive do you have in your 360?

Well I would definitely purchase it then. You will need the Xtractor plus spear if you are going to do 74850C Lite-ONs. The kit definitely makes it easier as you don't have to lug around the 360 & power supply.

This will power the DVD drive when you have it connected to your PC to do the flashing via SATA.

It is definitely a convenience to have the kit if you are doing a lot of flashing. It can easily pay for itself.

The Kit seems to be kinda pointless to me....I may be completely wrong, but can't you just power the drive through the 360 and plug the SATA into your PC? All I want to do is flash my one Liteon DG-16D2S 74850C and shelling out $60 for the kit doesn't seem worth it. I know all the manuals say to get the kit and the probe, but it just seems easier to hook it up as stated before.

Couldn't be more right. As long as you have a spear (which you can make yourself on the cheap) and a SATA port, you don't need anything else.

What is the Spear for anyways? I keep seeing it, but no explanation. Also, how would you make your on spear?

What is it that you have to solder? Why? It just seems weird to me that the drive is connected by 2 cables, and to hook it up to a pc you need all these connector kits and anti-soldering things.

On some Lite-On drives you can't get the drive key from the the drive through the SATA port initially. So you use the 'spear' to literally read the drive key right off the board itself. The spear is connected to your PC's serial port.

It's a super simple device, but companies on the net make it look cool and charge a premium for it.

It's essentially a needle, a resistor, and a female DB9 port. Add in some wire and you've got a spear.

Re: Soldering -- there is no soldering required at all. Unless you decide to make your own spear, that is.

Glad you somewhat got your question answered :) But I still have a question about the homemade spear without a CK3 or Xtrator kit. I seen images of people just using a paper clip and then most people are splicing a cable in the DVD cable and hooking up a wire. How would I do that if I DON'T use any kits?

The one benefit of the CK3, as I understand it, is that it can put your drive into mode B physically.

This is a benefit for those times when a you get a stubborn drive won't seem to go into mode B from software alone.

Also, from what I understand, if you accidentally plug the power cable in upside down, it won't fry your drive.

This is all what I understand from reading about the CK3, since I don't feel like it's worth it to have one myself.

Sounds like you are seeing pictures of people using their own home-made spears. I wouldn't take a splice out of the DVD cable, though. People can use paperclips, needles, springs; anything metal to use as the spear. It does need 5v of electricity, but you can get that from a molex connector on your PC's power supply. It really isn't as complicated as it sounds.

It involves putting a metal piece into a hole while a molex connector is connected to your PC's power supply.

And not all drives are Lite-Ons. Not only that, and you only have to do this to Lite-Ons for their initial flash. All subsequent upgrades do not require the use of a spear.

So, this is how I am understanding what you are saying....I take a piece of wire and plug it into a molex plug, then I put the other end on the MB spot and that should trick the 360 into sending the drive key out the SATA port to my PC? all the while its being powered by the 360 itself.

Also, what is the "tray half open" method? is it required? can one do this with my plan above?
