I recently broke out my old 360 but the fan sounds like a jet taking off. Is there a quite more efficent fan that will help prevent rrod and save my ears. The cheaper the better.

If that fan sounds that loud then that means your console is overheating.

it may be worth taking your 360 apart and cleaning the insides and fan out as any build up of dust will lower the efficiency of the fans. also did you 12v mod the unit???? as that makes the 360 a fair bit louder?????
Dont even think about how i do this 1 handed... just know i do and i can kick your ass at CoD, Gears, SF, VF .. get the picture *wink*

Well it's one of the older models so I thought they were all just like that. I might do the x-clamp fix so.

or the xbox thinks it's overheating ;)
u can get a whisper fan for $20-30, the ones i've seen have had LED lights too.
just look up that and i've found that they work well, and installing the fan is really simple if ur willing to take apart the xbox, i mean u can get an external fan too. this is just for the internal option.
the taking apart of the xbox will probably be more difficult than putting in the fan if you haven't done it b4.
but if the xbox has an issue with it's overuse of the fan, it will still be running more quickly than normal, depending on the game and level of performance and graphics you're playing at. the fan should still noticably make a difference though.
hope this helps : )

No 12v mod. I just took the fan out and it is silly dusty so will give that a clean.
This is a 2006 console. I there not a better fan around for these now?

Yeah I have the 360 open already. I was looking at the whisper fans but they claim to be 10% quieter. I was hoping for something better but will probably go for one of those thanks.

You can get the Whisper Legacy (new model of the Max). That way you can switch between 5v and 12v. At 12v the fan will be loud, but being as you have a '06 console I'd be more concerned about effective cooling vs. quietness.

Well you could make the ultimate in quiet xboxes in build a case to immerse the whole board in Mineral Oil. all components can be in it except the DVD drive. Keeps everything cool.

After I fixed my old Samsung 360's e74, the fans run at full speed no matter what. Even with the case off, the thing will run full speed. Yeah, it's pretty loud but I have it sitting as far away as possible and use ear phones so I don't mind. I much rather have it loud then die on me again.
The thing has been thru a lot so as long as it keeps working, I'll put up with it. FYI, when I got it in a trade, the dvd drive didn't work, the case was missing, and all the screws that held the mobo to the cage was gone so only the x-camps screws were holding it in place. Its a fighter!

Except the hdd, also. But that is valid. And, of course, depending on the size of the tank you may need a way to cool the oil.

No it was actually confirmed that you can put the HDD in but i would say in the case of a game on the HDD playback speed could suffer can't say for sure. i would not put mine in the tank but others may not care so long as they can play. As for cooling the oil so long as the tank was roughly the size of the case you should not worry but again i would make mine about 2x as big so be sure. A reflow would be a good suggestion here though cause messing with the MB after it was in this stuff is chaotic.

But the hdd isn't completely sealed. I believe there's a hole, something to do with air pressure.

The HDD itself is sealed it has to be to work. if any light got in then your data would suffer.

that hole will not allow liquid through it. let alone mineral oil

I'm sure it would but it's not worth it for this old fighter. And no, it's not jtagged.

It'd be pretty cool looking, though. You could set up a small fish tank. Maybe put some fake fish, plants, maybe a sunken pirate ship.

I was gonna buy a legacy fan for ?25 but instead I will just install my games on hdd so it's quiter and runs cooler. The 20gb hdd only allow for two games to be installed but I strictly only play sports games so not switching between many.
Sorry bhetrick as much as I would love my xbox in a fish tank with a pirate ship I don't have the $$$.

Installing to the hdd will save wear and tear on your dvd drive, but it doesn't make any difference on the gpu. It will run the same temp, be it normal or overheating, no matter how you run the game.

It really is not that expensive i believe.
Video
These guys chose the expensive way to be honest. but that is for a computer as well.
Mineral oil is the worst part but you only need to get so much so it is not too bad. like 1 gallon or 2 is it. 5 Gallons is way too much unless you want to do multiple boxes
Also just had another thought. Liquid cooling kits for computers. Low profile ones. You can get a waterblock for the xbox and just use a regular liquid kit.
