How can MS justify selling Live for £40 a year is ridiculous. I think it's way OTT and would like other peoples thoughts on this.

considering i play on live a few hours a week i have no problem with it. you're basically paying $1 (US) a week to get unlimited entertainment. i should be more pissed about a movie costing me $11 to see and it only lasts for 2 hours if i'm lucky.

its well worth it for me. but then again, im not paying for it. im using the 1 month cards i get when i sent consoles into MS to be fixed, and the 48 hour passes from my local video rental store.

If you're paying £40 a year, you're not shopping at the right online stores! :D You can buy a 12 month subscription for £27/£28 online, with the code delivered instantly via email.
It's worth it for me just cos Live is so seamlessly integrated with the console. Inviting players to a game, joining players in a game and joining a session in progress all work better on the 360 than any other console, plus you've got the party mode, cross-game chat, private chat, voicemail messaging and so on. There's demos of all the downloadable games and downloadable content is cheaper on Live too. PS3 owners (of which I am one) have waited ages for the Fallout 3 DLC, but they're having to pay £7.99 per DLC pack. It was only £6.80 on Live. The same with map packs for COD. That happens all the time, so even though PSN is free, it's missing quite a few features, it's nowhere near as well integrated with the system, and if you buy a fair bit of DLC as I do, Live pretty much ends up paying for itself just because the content is cheaper on there.
Another thing I like about Live is that when I go into a multiplayer game with random folks, people actually speak! I had a 4 player game of Zombie Apocalypse earlier and the other 3 guys had headsets on and we had a good laugh playing it. Sure, sometimes you get dickheads on there, but you can mute or ignore them. I've been playing Fat Princess on PSN and it would be a great game if people played together as a team, but nobody talks, so a lot of the time everyone's just running about doing their own thing.

If Live was free and as basic as PSN, it would suck. You get a lot for the yearly fee.
I mainly just play online (I hate single player) so it's worth it for me. There's a lot of features we wouldn't get if it was free.

I would much rather have to pay $70 a year for xbox live than not pay and have xbox live turn like psn.

hmn personally I hate that you have to pay for live. but that could be because I never use any of the extra functions like dl demos or watching trailers or the integrated msn account. I just play online. And since thats the only reason I pay at all I wish they would put more effort into getting rid of all the lag in the games. like tonight this guy in halo just started dissapeering and floating in the air (why should I have to pay for that?). or mvc2, sometimes I'll be on huge streaks and then i'll just get knocked out of a game for no reason. I also can't stand seeing adds on the dashboard, i don't want to pay to see adds for crap i don't want. even the free stuff sucks like 1v100, you can get all the questions right and there will still be like ten people ahead of you on the leaderbords. And the rep system omfg, they made me change my name once because of complaints yet i see people with names that are racist or sexist all the time. then people can file reviews on you that make no sense. like one of the choices is "did not understand the game" another was player skill was to great;how can you complain about such things? While i think that live does offer some nice extra features that the psn doesn't offer (like party chat) at a price, I just think that sense we are paying, they should be able to get rid of a lot of the things that are wrong with live as well.

The lag isn't microsoft's fault, it's the people who use live with crappy connections. I almost never lag, (apart from when I play halo co-op campaign with yanks).

What ads? I never see any ads apart from the spotlight section, but those alert people of upcoming games and dlc.

Those particular complaints don't go towards rep, they are used to make matchmaking fairer.

It's like steak vs hamburger. Yeah, they both are beef, but one costs more fore a reason. (Steak wins). Live costs, PSN & WiiConnect don't. You get what you pay for. Besides, it's slightly less than a dollar a week.

Yeah I can see your point about the lag not being their fault, but what i'm getting at is cant they eliminate the people who have slow connections? I know they scan your connection anyway so why let those people play when they know it will ruin the game. Also why spend so much money trying to detect a modded console, what about the lag switchers and plug pullers? there are so many who get away with it, i would like to see my money used towards stopping that type of thing.
also, they always have stuff that they say is sponsored by a certain company, thats when you will see the adds, like verizon, and car adds to name a couple. why do they need sponsors to pay for content, aren't we already paying for it? Honestly sponsership is just another term for. "pay me to show your name or product to my customers"
and that player review thing does not really work, I used to block people on ufc 2009 all the time for quitting after I won just to play them again and have them laugh and do it again. thats the only reason I stopped playing that game actually. idk, i know its a good service for the features, I just can't help feeling like they are cheating me sometimes as well.

I guess it's because of what I actually get out of live. My connection is about 2-3MB, but in peak times, I can not watch a video, trailer or actually have to stop playing live as the lag is so bad :-(
I just don't like paying money for a service I just cannot use due to my infrastructure.

its worth it if you play alot of multiplayer games. but if you play games like fallout 3 i dont see a need for it. but for 13 months its 49.99 at amazon. thats less than 4 dollars a month

i was anti live for over 1 year. let me explain how my life has changed...I am a pirate. I will be the first to admit it. I dont like to pay for certain things. How was I going to pay for xbox live? So i got some free 1 month cards and tried it out. after the first month , I bought a 12month suscription and havent looked back. I am now officially hooked on COD which I NEVER PLAYED before. it comes out to around 11 cents a day to play on live WORTH IT

Guess you've never played an MMORPG. (A good thing). They cost £10/month and that only allows you to play that game online. Xbox Live is £3/month to useanyof your xbox games.
In general, Xbox Live is an absolute madhouse, it's full of 6 year old whiney kids with names like .::oOOxXxImAwesomexXxOOo::. and no skill, who insist on using voice chat. It is, however, handy for throwing even more money at microsoft for downloadable content.
Yes, I'm a sceptic of the system, but I still pay for it - that should say enough.
