Many thanks again. I was just about to raise the issue about the kernel versus the Drive version but thought I'd get shot down in flames!!!
Will take the drive out tomorrow as indicated. My bet is that it's the 74850C. I note in the stickies it says that the process was changed for this drive and requires a full dump etc etc. Are you still saying that soldering is not required. I've ordered the CK V3 but son't think I get a probe with that. Will I have to order this separately?

yeah you'll want to order the probe and just follow the jungleflasher tut - the latest one. It's really and easy process, and I don't believe you need a full dump or a dummy dump - just the keys, but since you're new to this just stick to the dummy dump. Make sure you are vary careful and get the proper keys off the drive (do it like 4 or 5 times and make sure they are all the same) if you don't get the proper key and you erase the FW - you are screwed, this will render your entire 360 useless! If you are paranoid about screwing this up, you can always buy a benq drive off of Ebay and spoof it as your original drive and leave your old drive untouched.

Have 1.74 JF tutorial and will follow section in relation to 74850c Liteon (once confirmed today). Have gone through tut but have some queries so wondered if you could clarify these:
1. The tut refers to use of CK3 probe or Xecutor Probe 2 (in Probe V1 mode). I?ve ordered a CK V3 kit which will consist of a USB to key extractor amongst other things. I assumed that one end would go into spare USB port and other touches R707 pad. Is this in effect the ?CK3 probe??
2. The tut emphasises the importance of disabling VIA card and removing drivers to stop freezing but it doesn?t talk about re-enabling at the end of the process. Do I still need to do this?
3. At the very end it refers to power off, disconnect SATA from PC, connect SATA back to console and test. I haven?t come across this before can you explain please.
Sorry to be dumb again. Promise to keep quiet until I?ve checked the Liteon for firmware version and got my CK V3 kit.

again research!!!!!!!!! You cannot do the 707 method unless you have a 7xxx series lite-on and that isn't the correct way. It does NOT dump the laser calibration which will in the end cause issues with the laser. It is also not safe for xbox live. Follow this TUT: (vampire tut but same things for both devices)

It depends on what you ordered do you have an exact link? But yes, that is what the probe does. You really should have figured out what kind of drive you have before ordering anything.

It depends on if you have the VIA or not in your PC - you need to confirm whether or not you do before disabling anything.

Just means, power off the drive, disconnect the long sata cable you used to connect the drive to your PC, then plug the little black sata cable back in to connect it to your xbox.

I don't mind it so much, but it's probably a good idea to wait and see what you are working with.

Tony here says I am wrong in a PM about soldering the lite-on. I guess he knows another way of doing a full dump without cutting the traces. I have a PM he sent saying I am wrong. Moron. This thread is also stupid. How many times do I have to tell you, YOU NEED TO CUT 2 TRACES AND USE A PROBE 2 TO DO A FULL DUMP. Stop sending me PM's saying I am wrong when everyone here knows I am right.

what is funny to me is that we are overlooking the fact that it is assumed to be a liteon, i have 4 elites right now that all have hitachi drives in them.

The older models of the Elites can have a hitachi or BenQ. We're going by what the OP says he has.

yeah he said he was assuming it was a liteon, and then he went to i am pretty sure it is a 74850 he has not opened the box to find out, he needs to give an exact model number so we can try to help him instead of posting a lot of assumptions lol.

Sorry to keep you all in suspense for so long. The drive is a Hitachi GDR 312 OL manufactured in Oct 2007.
Does that make my job easier or harder?
I've also looked at the tuts on removing the elite cover etc and all is fine except having exposed the drive and broken the seal the DVD drive won't lift out like the baby in the You Tube video.
Any advice on that would also be much appreciated as usual.

At this point I would probably advise having someone else do it. If you can't even get it apart, you have simply done ZERO research. There are step by step videos on youtube showing how to do this. You just want us to hold your hand.
As for the drive, if you even have a 6421 Via card, it's simple in a way but the hitachi's are junk drives. It may need a POT cal after a flash. Do us all a favor, and use google or youtube better.

I've spent weeks looking at every single You Tube, xbox hackers forum, After Dawn etc etc etc. What may be utterly straightforward to 15 year olds still in school can be a bit of a struggle to the older fraternity. The common thing is that there is ome diagreement about whether to flash, cut traces, JTAG, MRA, XYZ, ABC.............
I have never known a forum like this?

I'm not commenting on the stupid little board feud. All I'm going to do is give Tony a piece of advice in regards to his xbox - buy a benq drive off of ebay or somewhere, spoof it as the hitachi with the latest LT FW and set that POS Hitachi on a shelf some where. Other than the placing of the POS on the self, the Jungleflasher tutorial will walk you through all of the steps you need to follow.

Why yes. I do believe most of us here are infected. I also found it quite humorous that you are referring to us as 15 year olds when the only one making ad hominem remarks is you. There has been ZERO disagreement about whether to flash, cut traces, or JTAG.
Step 1: Do you have the old dash kernel?
No: You can only flash it. See step 2.
Yes: Go for a JTAG
Step 2: Check which drive you have
Is it an older drive pre-liteon?
Yes: Hook it up to the PC and easily flash it. Hitachi's take about 20 minutes to do with a connectivity kit.
No: See step 3
Step 3: Which lite-on drive is it?
Old revision: Just get a connector kit and probe
New revision: You need to cut traces

To add to the irony, favour is actually the correct spelling, favor comes from favour, like colour and color. Broke the cardinal sin of being the spelling police, tsk, tsk...

No actually it doesn't work that way.
Stateside we removed the U from a lot of words. They are both correct.
You broke the cardinal sin of trying to correct someone's spelling who was trying to correct someone's spelling while doing it incorrectly.
