I am looking into buying a reball station from ebay. the one in particular that I'm looking at runs about $99usd not counting shipping & handling. it says it works for xbox360 & ps3. the rework stations are way more expensive, but everyone always says reball is better. what exactly is my best option? reflow or reball? got a xbox with gpu problems & one with ram problems. any help with what I should look into reball vs reflow will be deeply appreciated. thanks...

if you found a reball station for 99 bucks on ebay, its a total POS and will not do any good. reball stations are 1k minimum.....reflow stations are 500 minimum by the time you get the hot air station and the preheater....

the device you are looking at is not all you have to have to reball, it is only a press that holds the stencil so you can apply the new balls, you still have to have the means to remove the chip from the board and re-apply it, IE rework station, a reflow machine alone is not going to solve you problem either if you have popcorned balls under the chips. in order to buy and do the repairs you are wanting to do completely you are looking at spending around 2000 dollars.

Well, the idea behind spending $500~$1000 for repair equipment would be to fix multiple 360's and earn the cost back plus profit.
Not fix just one.

well I don't have the kind of money to be buying $1000 worth equipment & the time to hope I make my money back at the moment. maybe in the near future I will. and plus these rrod 360s are a real nuisance. thanks for everyones help tho. I would send it to someone but I don't trust reflows. they're not reliable. went through a lot of trouble last yr with reflow services that had warranties as well...

i got a slightly "cleverer" answer over on xecuter, to load a game, first person shooter, in practice and put an elastic band onthe controler so the on screen avatar runs round in circles, half an hour later if he is still running, its a good repair

im not shy,,my Aoyue reflow station works great,as matter of fact i have a nozzle that fits the ps3 chips, and if you use it right, you dont need to spend thousands of dollars for a reballing unit,if you have to go that far as reball it,,get another console, there cheap enough now,

I had an Aoyue station. You can supposly reball with it. Hated it and got rid of it. I still do a lot of repairs but the Aoye Stations are no better than a Heatgun. It just blows hot air that you can aim on the chip directly. As "Wooly" as shown, you can make a heatgun do the same.

Modking it's good that this is just a forum and you can express your opinion. I've seen a few times that you've ripped on these machines and your opinion is just not even close to reality.
My reflow station has done me well (aoyue 968). I've fixed well over 600 xbox's, over 50 ps3's a few dv6000-dv9000 motherboards, a few dlp tv motherboards and a few other bga chips with it. Never had a problem. I use the machine every day and haven't had to replace the heating element yet.
The aoyue machines are not junk and are far better than any heatgun. With a heatgun you're going to blow capacitors around bga chips, with a reflow machine you need the right sized nozzle and the correct temperatures but you won't even get close to damaging those heat-sensitive components if you know what you're doing.
I've been running a computer repair shop with this machine, doing all the soldering work for dc/usb jacks and so far haven't even had a hiccup. I think you just want to rip on it because you didn't use flux and didn't have hot enough reflows.
It's pretty sad that a good machine is getting bad rep because the user is incompetent. That's like if you went out and bought a brand new ferrari, crashed it and then blamed the car. You just don't know what you're doing. Think about how you're going to effect the community when this thread shows up in a search result. You're going to tarnish aoyues name.
It's pretty sad if you ask me.

You should understand the aoyue is a name brand. There are different types of machines. There's infrared which is usually used for reballing and then there's hot air which is usually used for reflowing. You can use either for removing the bga chip but you'll want an ir machine to melt the balls when you have them in the stencil.
The 968 is what most of us have/had and usually the best machine to start out with.
Here's a link to the 968
http://sra-solder.com/product.php/6267/1
You can also buy other hot air machines that work the same way, the cheapest one is about $90.
Take a look at all the machines aoyue offers.

@ C4RN1
I bought a aoyue 968 and tried to go the griddle route to heat my boards.
I was worried about putting alot of money into the unit when i didnt hear anyone bragging about success with that machine. obviously my success rate was terrible not having the right setup. i have it mounted up and tried four different recomended profiles but only few boards came out successful out of alot before i gave up and starting using machine for soldering only.
I was wondering if i purchased what you have shown in your picture to go along with my aoyue 968 would you be willing to lend me some knowledge and help me out with my profile on what temps for what times and so fourth?
also like the picture you have hanging on wall i have something similar hanging above my workbench! I can never remember which is positive on the leds and the board.. my memory is terrible!

I have the 968, the 618 platform and the 853a preheater.
http://i145.photobucket.com/albums/r217/Carnifreekshow/IMG00113-20100903-1643.jpg
You'll only need the 41mm nozzle to reflow the cpu/gpu on xbox's and for ps3's you'll need the 45mm nozzle.
You can find all of these nozzles here
http://sra-solder.com/section.php/93/1
besides the 45mm nozzle that's an ebay item
http://cgi.ebay.com/NEW-BGA-BLOW-HEAD-KIT-850-Size-45-x-45mm-/320609260875?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item4aa5cd154b
I've found that the bottom heat is almost more important than the top. The bottom needs to be set around 250C for warmup. Then when you finally get the board temp up above 300F you can raise your bottom temp to 275-280C and complete the rest of the reflow.
I don't exactly time my reflows, i let the board warm up, go work on something and come back to it. Though if you're at or above 240C you can't leave the station unattended. I always use kester 951 flux and always 12V the xbox after the reflow.
As for reflow profile
TOP: 90C (5min) 201C (5 min) 240C (3 min) 300C (1 min)
BOTTOM: 250C (5min) 260C (5 min) 280C (4 min)
Always turn the knob on the preheater down to the lowest setting, you don't want to use the switch. You can use the knobs on the 618 workstation to carefully move the nozzle away after you hit 300C for one minute. I haven't had any problems using the workstation while the board was still hot.
I'll be upgrading to the largest preheater pretty soon so if someone wants my 853a preheater i'm willing to part with it for a fair price.

968 + t-8280 preheater with a custom 618 stand for me. works great. the t-8280 covers the entire 360 motherboard so you dont have it heating just one part as with the 853a. also the 8280 has a built in thermal couple (which you will also need to buy in order an external TC reader to monitor top heat).
no doubt the preheater c4 linked to in the post above mine is nice, but i personally feel its not worth the extra 100-150 dollars when all you can is an extra 30 MMs in either direction. also, add in the fact that the 8280 is used by A LOT of people and ive only seen a handful using the new aoyue product.
here is a great site for reflowing/reballing information:
