Is it safe for me to play back-ups of NTSC games and play them on my modded WiiKey2 PAL Wii console? Or will this brick it? Thank you.

100% safe so long as you remove the updates from the disks. Letting out-of-region games update on your wii will result in what is called a 'semi-brick.' Games will still work but you wont be able to access the wii settings menu or go online with it.

If your wii is 4.3 though then the out-of-region backups wont play with modchip alone and you'll need to softmod to play them. Softmodding will have the bonus effect of blocking the updates though.

Ok. Thanks for the help. A program such as WiiBrickBlocker?

My Wii version is 4.2E.

I've read online about softmodding, but it was quite complicated. What's the simplest method you know of softmodding?

Brickblocker would do it. Wiiscrubber is another option for removing updates from the disk.

I have to apologize for a mistake, 4.2 will block import games as well. But since you have a modchip you don't need to fully softmod to play imports. Install the homebrew channel with bannerbomb and launch the games with geckoOS.

Thanks penguin98. It seems as if bannerbomb will work fine with 4.2, but as for launching games with geckoOS, this page: http://wiibrew.org/wiki/Gecko_OS says that it will not play backups - or does that mean only if you do NOT have a modchip installed that geckoOS will not play backups alone?

You're exactly right. Gecko is designed to launch out-of-region games and play games without running updates. It lacks the ability to launch backups, but when used in combination with a modchip it will launch out-of-region backups and bypass the wii blocking those import games.

You should get out of using the modchip as its old news and it comes with too many hassles and go into softmodding your wii.
Programs like USB Loader and CFG USB Loader allows you to play games of a Hardrive (with out the need of having to have a million DVD games liying aroung your house) and it stops the process of games updating your wii with new updates and screwing everything.
Also it stops all those DVD problems of the Wii not being able to read the disk because it wasn`t burned properly or it needs to be patched ect.
I started with a Wiikey when I first got the Wii (when it first came out in Australia = got it launch date) and then moved onto Softmod and never looked back ^^.
Softmoding it gets rid of updates, region, patching complications in games and it saves you money having to buy disks :)

THANK YOU for this post as it was exactly what I needed to know! Now my imports work again with my DriveKey and 4.2u!

Then please explain what else I am missing? I am using scrubbed PAL backups on a NTSC system with a DriveKey and now just added the Homebrew page with Gecko OS on a SD card.

Vato is mostly correct when he listed off the advantages of playing the games through a USB loader. It blocks updates, avoids bad burn issues, avoids the issues with import games, loads quicker and keeps you from having to buy DVDs all the time.

He's wrong on a few things though.

It won't prevent patching issues with some games. Any games that use hardware addons may have issues unless the patches has been included in the main system menu updates. These are games like DDR that use the dance pad or wii sports resort with the motion plus addon.

And gecko should be able to launch just about everything without issue. I'm sure there are one or two games out there that it won't, but they're likely games that have issues with USB loaders as well.

The way I look at it, not everyone wants to use a USB loader. Personally I do find it easier but unless someone is asking for information on USB loaders I don't go pushing them like 'OMG YOU NEED TO DO THIS OR YOUR LAME' (thats a crack at you, vato)

When someone has a specific question then I simply try to answer that in the simplest way possible.

Pengiun98

Is there something I am overlooking in my setup? My Wii Drivekey is set to block import updates and I only use scrubbed PAL backups with Gecko OS and only used scrubbed NTSC backups with the Drivekey so I guess I am trying to understand what it is that "Vato" is eluding to that will have me "coming back and crying". My Drivekey has worked fine for me for over a year just lost the ability to play imports with 4.2u but now they work fine again with the Homebrew/Gecko OS combo. I am fine with this new setup, meaning I do not care if I have to burn a few DVD here or there or the load times. None of which are an issue or have been for any of the backups I am using.

Your setup is fine. The drivekey/gecko trick should play damn near any game out there. And any titles it doesn't play for whatever reason would likely have problems with vato's setup as well.

If new games will keep working forever I dont know, but since we can't predict every anti-piracy patch that might come up in the future its not something we can really worry about at the present time.

Thanks again for your help! I have never used the Homebrew/Gecko OS stuff before and was afraid I was leaving myself vulnerable using this new method. By the way, I did not install Bootmii when I installed Homebrew, I was not 100% sure it was needed for the way I have mine setup.

Thanks for the clarification, penguin98. I haven't actually yet gotten my wii chipped, but thought that I'd research before doing so to see what I'd need. I hope it will be succesful with the Wiikey2 + GeckoOS + Bannerbomb method.

Vato, I appreciate the suggestion of softmodding, and I did consider that an option, but when reading quite an elaborate guide (can't remember which one) it kind of detered me from softmodding, especially the part a about possibly bricking the Wii if even one step is incorrect (I'm not that technologically literate with Wiis). However, do you know any simpler method of softmodding? Which way do you recommend?

Oh, and if anyone needs to get their Wii chipped in Adelaide, Australia, DNA Systems at Salisbury sells WiiKey2 for $25 (and will install it for $50). http://www.dnasystems.com.au/ Much cheaper than another place that wanted $130...

errrr yes it does get rid of the patching because some games in order to play it as a dvd needs to be patched and when you run it off USB Loader you don`t. An example is No More heroes and SSBB. Though you will still need to install IOS in order to run some games so... And as to your crack I was marely telling him what the easiest most less expensive and practicle way of doing things was. Unles you like to have a million dvds lying around in your house and having to spend lots of cash of crappy burns trying to figure whats wrong with it (as well as getting bard burns) I have done it from experience so this is why I am telling him to go for sofmodding. Oviously you don`t think about this things or are just not nice enough to let him know the real facts ^^

@ drallama.
I was in the same state as you when I first was softmodding my wii but don`t listen to all those cry babies that have bricked their wii`s because in my opinions....they are idiots and don`t read properly before they do all the steps. The tend to rush into it and then oops..... I F-up lol. I have softmodded my wii from day one and have done it to lots of other peoples and mates Wii`s and until now I have yet to have one bricked on me also if you do brick it in some way there is alaways a possibility of getting it back to its previous state (which I have done to one by doing backup using a program before I decided to install an IOS). Anyways seriously it`s pretty easy, just follow the steps and you should be ok and if in doubt read the comments on what people say.
Usually the best methods to do are found on youtube as they provide a video as well and you can just follow the video if you are not sure of the explanation or are confused.

Here is a video for it http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=geO8qQEtca4
hope it helps. ^^

Err, I played SSBB and no more heroes back in the days long before USB loaders and they didn't need any patching to play. In fact, I've only ever had to patch one single game ever, new super mario bros wii, and that patch was specifically so that I could rip it to my USB loader.

I have never once had to patch a game to play on a non-softmodded wii.

The whole bad burn issue is totally overblown. I've had a wiikey in mine since the chip first became available and I've only ever had a handful of bad burns. 7-8 tops over the course of several years.

You're the one making things up. Case in point:

GeckoOS will play anything that a USB loader will.

Anyway, I guess we're done here.

Nope GeckoOS won`t play everything....
Try playing Monster Hunter Tri by itself... lol Unles you install an IOS it needs.
There is alot of games some loaders will play and others won`t
So the case of saying gekoOS plays everything is totally crap as it depends if the game needs a special IOS installed or not that will make the game be played by that certain loader.
Another example is the new Prince of persia...USB Loader won`t play it but CFG USB Loader will (the new version).

Softmodding isn't that difficult if you can follow directions and take your time doing it. It also has its advantages over a hardmod.

If all you want to do is play backup Wii disc games and nothing more, then it really doesn't matter what method you do. They both over time have proved to work.

If someone asked what would be the better route to go I would always say a softmod. It is inexpensive to softmod plus you have more options available.

Ok, I now have the Homebrew Channel and Gecko OS installed. I want to play an out-of-region back-up (Michael Jackson: The Experience, if it makes any difference) since I have a PAL Wii and it is an NTSC game. I launch the game using Gecko from my SD card + the homebrew channel. It loads for a bit and shows a little bit of the introduction but then switches to reading the disc intently for a minute then says that there is an error and to read the Nintendo manual. I have already changed the setting to 'force NTSC'. I am using Gecko 1.9.3.1 on a 4.2E Wii. Any advice?

You don't want to force NTSC.

You want to force to the video mode of your System not the game.

NTSC Wii + PAL Game = Force NTSC

PAL Wii + NTSC Game = Force PAL50 or PAL60 (PAL60 would probably work better on NTSC games).

So try forcing to PAL60 and see if that works.

I don`t get why so many people tell different ways of doing things. If you install things correctly and follow the steps you don`t need to change anything. I have a PAL Wii and I am able to play all the region games (PAL , NTSC, NTSC-J,) without having the need to force or change regions. I use USB Loader GX and have been using it for a long time and I have never had the need to force a region to be able to play a game. I don`t get why so many people need to do so. I think probably cuz their wii is not moddified or softmoded properly.

Even when I used the Wiikey I never had the need to change or force regions on my wii.

I suggest you go softmodding and go from there.

Try this link if you decide to softmod your wii.

Here is a video for it http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=geO8qQEtca4
hope it helps. ^^
