Alright...

I've read the stickys and the few mod/backup threads that go back to '07...a couple degenerated into name calling but all had great info...my concern is the DOI (Date of information)...

JUST bought my son (and me) a Wii...first thing it wanted to do was update...so I did...so I'm now V 4.2...

A: am I DIW (Dead in the Water) as far as being able to backup my purchased games now that I'm 4.2?

B: if not, please point me to the "latest and greatest" info...like I said some of the threads go back to '07 and much of the info I'm sure is OBE.

Bottom line...want to make sure I don't break the kid's game and brick it...I understand Homebrew, ISO, NERO all that good stuff but just don't want to mix old information with new and screw the thing up...

Like I said, I've done the homework and am CPU knowledgable but just want to make sure I proceed w/ caution and don't mix and match steps...while DVD, CD, PC backups aew nothing new for me, dorking w/ a gaming system is brand new...

Thanks
Dan

Alright, so that's the latest and greatest that gets me softmodded...able to play a backed up game...now to the actual backing up...again, I've read the threads...I forget the name of the program, "Rawdump" I believe...anything newer or safer than the threads on that?

Thanks MUCH again....

Yeah...I had read that one...seems there was some debate as to whether or not you really need the LG drive...remember a wive's tale about the disc spinning in a different direction and a few others....Also remember reading a method where you went strait from the Wii to your HD (or maybe it was via the SD card)...

1. No debate, you need the LG drive (one or two variants will work). There is an entire thread devoted to which drives will and will not work.

1a. Google "Rawdump" and "friidump".

2. There are other methods to dump Wii games. Google "superdump".

I started down your path about 3 months ago. I also did try to use a program called "DVD dumper". That allows you to chose Wifi or device mode (SD, USB FORMATED FAT16/FAT32). I found that in Wifi mode it took hours to dump one ISO. There was a program reliese to the name of SupperDump that address that but I have no experience with it.

Currently I use my USB loader software to dump my game to a USB drive. "30 min to complete a DUMP vrs Hour +" Then if I where to want a disk I would bring my USB drive to the PC, Extract the game using "WBFS Manager".
USB Loader that I have used are
1 CoverFloader With Forwarder "I'm Currently using"
2 SDUSB-Loader_cfg ""
3 USB_Loader_GX-ULNR-r600 "installs as a channel no need for a dedicated SD card"
4 USB_Loader_GX-ULNR-r516 ""

Some quick Googles will find these for you. I have all the zip files on my PC but no quick links to share. The other thing that I have done is to Copy/Paste the guides into MSWord to these programs with the File that way if the guide suddenly get removed you still have a copy.

You Will find that there are Many different developer our there all creating very good products that do similar things. The quicker you realize that once you have a product the works for you don't keep trying to load the latest one until you need to get the lattes game to work. Or you will wast all you time installing and not playing the great game that are out there.

Hi Dailun,

That's helpful information. Many thanks for that. Ltdcard, myself, and other noobs appreciate it.

As for the "not doing your homework" comment (which you've since edited out of your post) ...

That may be, but is there harm in someone asking a question ?

Do we want a dead forum where nobody posts ? Should noobs go to other forums instead, because they're too hesitant about posting here, in case someone jumps down their throat ?

If I may make a general observation ...

I've been observing this place for a couple of months. There's a wealth of great information, and if I may give someone a plug, I'd like to commend Smokyrain. She's a knowledge expert, and she's always polite and friendly in her posts. She doesn't berate or insult anyone, regardless of how basic the question may be.

However, there are a few in this place (not anyone who's posted in this thread, thankfully) who are downright rude. They may be knowledge experts in the same manner as Smokyrain, but that's where the similarity ends. They are nasty people. They seem to think they're Demigods.

Please, lets have more knowledge experts like Smokyrain.

If a basic question asks by a noob "offends" anyone ... here's a thought ... DON'T BOTHER REPLYING. It's much better to not reply at all, than to give a rude and nasty reply. If you MAKE THE CHOICE to reply, then please, keep it polite and friendly.

Just my thoughts.

Cheers,
TPB.

It could be said the other way as well. A dead website because those that help leave because some refuse to look through the Ultimate Sticky thread or search for their answer before starting a new thread.

You say you did your homework but the majority of questions you have asked could have been answered just by going through the Ultimate Sticky thread.

This guide HERE (the same 1 pryme_H linked to) is listed in the Ultimate Sticky thread. It has the latest info on how to softmod a 4.1 and below system as well I have included a link to a guide for 4.2 firmware systems.

Again the guide HERE and HERE are listed in the Ultimate Sticky thread. 2 different ways to backup your Wii games.

As well a simple backup Wii games search of the forum brought up some results. Below is just a few of them.

http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/471073
http://forums.afterdawn.com/t.cfm/f-154/...i_games-784965/

It isn't that basic questions offend me. It is more that those type of questions waist my time because I have to wade through them.

Nothing is more irritating then reading a question that could be answered by looking through the Ultimate Sticky thread or doing a simple search. Which the site rules state to do first before posting a question.

Then when I say do a search in one of these basic threads they cock an attitude saying if your not willing to help then don't post here. Since when is telling someone to search not helping? Since when is telling someone to search flaming them? It just shows how ungrateful those that have that attitude really are. Why should I or anyone else help if your not willing to help yourself first.

I don't even know why I bother making this point. You just wan't your answer and want it the easiest way you can get it. Well I didn't learn my knowledge that way and you shouldn't expect to either.

By the way it is true Smokyrain does help out allot on this site. But I have seen them get just as frustrated as I do at times with those that don't want to help themselves.

Larry...you're a real edited by ddp...PLEASE don't bother yourself w/ my useless quetions...you're obviously TOO busy...seriously...

I really don't need to explain myself to you...if you don't want to assist...then kindly go edited by ddp...otherwise, provide helpful information and move on...I need not be berrated...

I read the stickys, I did multiple searches, and multiple google searches....there's plenty of conflicting or dated information out there...something as simple as needing Zelda or not...so I asked a SIMPLE question..."Here's the details, I've read a bunch of stuff, please point me to the latest and greatest..."...provide a simple answer or be gone....

It's also about gathering an OPINION or two..."I like doing it this way because of XXX" could be pertinent information...Pointing to 2 different ways to theoretically do the same thing is going to inherently create questions... Really dude...don't bother reading in here anymore...I've already gottan a few e-mails from folks actually answering the mail....

Cheers!

I just started posting here heavily, and I must say that the community is not as friendly as the ones over at DVD Discussions and Software Specific Discussions (Fora I used to frequent). I don't think one can really blame newbies for being inquisitive most especially if they are operating on a $250 investment. While one may say, "then they shouldn't even venture into hacking their Wii to begin with if they can't follow a dumb-proof guide," then as a learned member you have the prerogative of not answering what you would consider "stupid questions." This isn't a job. No one gets compensated whether you contribute or not...

let's not be too hard on noobs and likewise, let's not disrespect those who are trying to point us in the right direction.

post edited out of respect of the mods.

I was kind of staying on topic. I was just showing where all the information that had been linked previously by other members above could have been found in the Ultimate Sticky thread.

And I asked for a quick validation that I was going in the right direction, operating off the latest sheet of music and solicit an opinion or two on the different ways to do things...

Again, posting multiple links to multiple ways to do the same thing only complicates the problem...I'm more than capable of following the tuts that are out here...been using the place for years...but in this instance, after reading a bunch of info, I felt it reasonable to verify my approach before I dorked something up...

Seriously, some of the tuts (or at least threads) still discuss Zelda being a requirement...
In the end it looks pretty straightforward now that I've been redirected back to some of the stuff I've already read....(ie. validated)....

Seriously I am just trying to help.

If you want to know if it is the latest and greatest info, then look at when the thread was created or look at the end to see when it was last edited. The 4.1 firmware and below softmod guide was last edited today, before that it was updated yesterday.

As for backing up Wii games there are 2 guides under the Ultimate Sticky that show you how to do it 1 by PC and another by using the Wii. As well doing a site search for backup wii game brought up 2 other ways to do it. With 1 of those having a debate as what is faster and easiest which was posted only a few months ago.

So looking at the date it was created or last edited should tell you how current the information is.

Seriously could you see how many threads that would be started if everyone needed stuff to be validated before they did anything? If your unsure then post in the guide that is already there. Ask if this guide is the most current or if there is an updated guide.

I hope I make some sort of sense.

Yeah, I understand...and you need to as well...

It's akin to the following:

"Jump Zone...jump!"
"This is the Jump Zone?"
"Yep, JUMP!"

Perhaps an unnecessary question for one but completely valid for the other...ANYWAY...we've wandered pretty far off course.

I read a ton of stuff and things got clouded once some of my searches, tales of brick incidents, and other user questions were laid over the Tuts. Taken as gospel, no problem...but once you add additional information and sad tales, they no longer look like gospel.

ANYWAY...you must be FAR too busy to be wasting your time in here...go do somethig else...if its SO bothersome to HAVE to read useless post after post....DON'T....change the station...F-off, because there are plenty of other folks out here who AREN'T bothered saying "Yep dude...good to go, I did it" and call it a day. That's all most of this was about...

Now seriously, waste (er..rather "waist") no more of your time w/ me...I'm beneath you.

No...you and I juat aren't hitting the same page and while I'm certainly partially to blame...you need to take a little too...

NONETHELESS...

DIRECTLY from the book of "NOTHING ever goes EXACTLY as a tut says":

I've got a "Failed (-1)" when trying to install Bootmii as an IOS...no option to install it as Boot 2.

Problem w/ the type of card it seems? Found one thread saying it's sensitive to varying types of cards....

Make sure you don't have the write protect in the lock position on the SD card.

If it is unlocked then you may need to try a different SD card.

not locked...double and triple checked all SD card contents...everything matches...no locked...

My plan is to dash to the store, leaving the wii as is...copy everythign from 1 SD card to a new one and hope to proceed...

EDIT EDIT

Bought a SanDisk and appear to be off to the races....

EDIT EDIT

Seems to have worked fine....need to find the LG drive next...but everything appears to be good....

FWIW, you're obviously a sharp guy Larry, we just weren't seeing things through the same eyes...something as simple as poor media had me thinking I had dorked my kids game....thus the extra (and perhaps unnecessary) question....don't waste your time with 'em...SERIOUSLY...my question was one that any number of folks out here could have answered....your knowledge set is obviously better applied to "real" questions...again, seriously...I just needed the first couple of answers I got and was off and running....

Thanks,
Dan

Looks like my comments may have been quickly overlooked above with the hate.

Anyhow I personally would buy a USB powered Hard drive that is listed in many places to work with the Wii USBLoaders. Games don't work 100% of the time but in most cases with a few game specific tweaks you can skip the disks and run directly from the USB Drive. Then again if a DVD is what you wish, plug the USB drive into your PC, Extract the ISO, and Burn.
