I have a 4.1U Wii that I just softmodded. As I understand, the latest software update is 4.2U. Is there a way to update to this with the softmodded system?

Unfortunately, the 4.2 update erases all homebrew, & can create problems re-softmodding. I suggest you stay on 4.1, but if you want to go to 4.2, you will have to softmod again. Make sure your console wasn't originally a korean system or you will brick indefinitely when you update!!

Intended solely to block hacking/piracy attempts. Among the changes were a fix for Bannerbomb v1, overwriting BootMii (as boot2) with boot2v4, blacklisting the title IDs "HAXX" and "DVDX", and several preventative IOSes (222, 223, 249, 250). Region-free hacks were blocked (now fixed), and Wiis converted to and from the Korean region were bricked with Error 003. Among other things that no one needs.

Well I just got my new one to work beautifully on 4.1 so I'm not even going to touch it.

Anyways, do you all know how to get DVDX working? I installed it but I don't see anything on the disc channel.

DVD's won't load from the disc channel. A useful answer is the MPlayer Channel. Install it with WAD Manager, & you can load DVD's from a channel in the system menu.

Here are the download links you will need:
WAD Manager: http://www.mediafire.com/?scwhmzam1mn
MPlayer Channel WAD: http://rs370.rapidshare.com/files/137656587/mplayerdvdchannel.zip

So do you need DVDX along with MPlayer?

Yes. DVDX Gives you DVD Capability, & MPlayer Launches them.

I heard somewhere that using the Wii for DVDs harms the laser. Is that true? Should I just prevent from doing that? This is my 2nd Wii (First had a GPU failure, black dots and lagging), I don't want to have to go for a third. Also does using the Wii for AVI files mess it up over time?

I'm not exactly sure, I imagine you can get replacement parts for things like the GPU. Otherwise, the Mplayer Channel can still be used to play movies off an sd card if that's what you want.

Well you can't get a new GPU, you have to get a new motherboard. It's not like a computer where the GPU is removable, it's soldered onto the motherboard and I believe it also has a key which is linked to the motherboard. Getting a new motherboard for a Wii is hard and not even worth it, better off getting another Wii.

That comment isn't helpful here at all so why do you bother posting?
I don't know what you do with softmodded systems but softmodding isn't for piracy. It's for unlocking the true features of the console such as being able to play emulators, third party games, copies of your STORE BOUGHT SCRATCHED OR UNREADABLE GAMES, or in my case play DVDs and movies. I own a DVD player, I own probably 10 or more of them. It's all about convenience though. Can a DVD player play AVI files off a flash drive? Yes but they are usually expensive. Does a DVD player take up extra space and require a second component input on the TV? Yes. I'd rather have one unit in my dorm that can do everything than having several separate units. I also hate having to switch component inputs and I'd rather not buy a auto switcher since I'll have to find a place to keep that.

Yeah, anyway I think DVD's can wear down the laser, but the laser and/or DVD Drive can be replaced.

A forum is meant so people can post problems or questions and get answers. If you don't have a solution, then there's no reason to post and waste forum space.

Thats true but better to avoid it if it will ruin it in the future. I think I'll use it for AVI files and Netflix more.

I don't see how using AVI files should mess up anything at all, it should be perfectly safe to use. Mplayer Channel can be used to run movies off a USB or SD Card.

No, sorry. My comments about shutting up and not posting here were directed to the user sutran. I will try AVI files and see how they work. Do you know how to tell how old the Wii is? I bought it used with an LU5xx serial number. Is it like the PS2 where SCPH-3x and SCPH-5x etc?

ooh, Unfortunately I don't know that. If your worried that some of the newer wiis don't run AVI's or DVD's, you can only really tell by using trial-and-error. Someone with more hardware expertise might be able to help you.

Mostly. There are other cases where you'd use IOS60 or something like that, it really depends on what you want to install. What do you want to install?
