hi :)
"drop off"...it's more like a waterfall (last post in dvd+/- for advanced users 15th march)
i'm the king of lurkers, wander through here every single day. noticed this a while ago.
AD has lost a lot of the original ppl that made the site great
there ain't no more chit chat during the thread being answered
to much goto this link or that link
nobody answers the question the newbie asks simply
we always had time to "speak" to the poster no matter how many times the ? was asked...with diagrams if needed
it seems that all have forgotten that we too were newbies once.
thank goodness there are still a few "oldies" left like...creaky...attar...alkohol...ddp (bless him)...and a few i haven't mentioned
phew.. thats worn out my index finger...back to lurking

oh..as a footnote. if perchance at the end of a link infested thread i come in and explain in text and pictures..hard titty..thats me :)

It's happened in this thread and a news article. What do you mean it wasn't a mod or admin? DVDBack23 banned me the last time.
personally i think its the new layout. i havent been coming since it launched really b/c everything is just so BIG. layout seems to loud for me and its frustrating to do so much scrolling. That's my two cents atleast.

We had guys here back in 2003 who were asking the same thing -- "why did the good old times end / forum sucks now". And by now, I think none of you in this thread even remember their nicknames :-) People come and go, but more importantly the changes in forum _post_ activity happen due:

1) Changes in technology. Currently there isn't a single big tech issue (esp. in AfterDawn's specialty field, like video) that would drive masses to seek answers to their questions. Back in 2003 - 2005 the DVD backup used to be "the thing", but as nowadays torrents are so widely available and backing up your own average DVD requires skills of a 5yr old, the topic isn't attracting traffic anymore (look at the popularity -- or lack of it -- of our old rivals back from those days. They didn't expand their coverage beyond digital video and now very few of them have the kind of traffic they used to have 5 years ago, while our _traffic_ - not necessarily number of posts - has kept up all these years..).

2) Competition. Back in 2005, only handful of sites reported about topics we did or had forums aimed for the topics we have. If back then you had 5 medium-sized digital video sites, there must be 150,000 of them now.

3) Changes in culture. Discussion forum culture changes all the time. Some more active posters might have gone behind closed doors, like Facebook, and prefer to discuss among with their friends only. The rise of blogs and blog culture made "masses" to avoid registrations -- you can post to virtually all of the blogs without registration, while discussion forums still require registration. Thus, people are much more hesitant to join and post nowadays.

4) "Get the answer _NOW_" culture. People Google their questions and seek the answers ASAP rather than post a forum post and wait until someone answers. This can happen as the Net has grown -- dramatically. 5 years ago you had to ask the question. Now, it is likely that your question has already been asked and answered, somewhere in the Internet. This is evident based on our traffic logs: traffic itself hasn't faded, actually it has risen quite nicely over these years, but the number of people who come from Google to read _one page_ and leave has gone through the roof.

We've run our site for 11 years now and have had discussion forums up for almost a decade, so changes in traffic, posts, etc have happened also in the past. The change in layout has actually managed to convert more "one page and off" people to people who actually post something. And we expect that trend to grow in future -- and will also monitor the ratio of people vs posts quite closely and make changes/tests accordingly.

One thing that is really missing from the current aD situation is a well used IRC room, I think.

I remember first getting involved in the 'community' and being greeted by the likes of The_Fiend, janrocks, Bubba & the Aussies, as well as current Staff/Mods at the time. Just doesn't seem to be that tight-knit at the moment anymore which is a shame because posting was more fun when you were interacting off the forum with the people you post alongside!

i don't think any of us believes that really

true....but i've been floating around here since 2004 ( lurking and learning for about 6/9mths) before bucking up the courage in 2005 to join and ask my first question. there are still a few (not many) of us left from then, here now.
i suppose that that means we also will become the unforgotten nicks in a little while
of course all your points are valid, but are you looking at it as from an admin point of view...or as a member seeing it from a forum point of view
Quote:

i've seen a couple of forums that have had the through traffic, but not the forum activity, die the death.(of course they were a lot smaller than AD and couldn't weather the storm)
it's not the through traffick that makes a forum great (it's good for the stats and advertizers) it's the members and the quality of their answers that do.
it just seems that standing on the outside looking in...at the moment we've lost the "great"
anyway..back to lurking for a couple of years and sea a few more changes :)

gurnard: You might be right about the forum starting to go downhill, but my hunch is the opposite. I'd say that the same old thing happens again and again -- something "new" in tech comes along that then sparks the discussion forum posting activity to new levels, new guys start posting like maniacs, etc until the "hype" surrounding that particular tech fades away and we end up with a current "nothing major to spark conversations" situation. After all, unlike many, many forums in the world, we've never encouraged "off-topic" discussions, but tried to people to focus on tech. If you look at some old tech forums that still get plenty of posts, most of those posts are to "Off-topic" forum rooms, where people chat about chicks' bums, cars, etc. Whereas with aD, the huge majority of posts are mostly "on-topic".

But hey, that's life. We do try to push more and more people to post their questions and answers -- with the new site, we've addressed some of those issues: replying is much more easier (reply box at the bottom), registration can be handled _after_ you've posted, logging in is much more straight-forward than what it used to be, etc. Furthermore, the new Q&A area (or tech support as we call it) gives another angle to the tech issues, for those users who aren't comfortable with forums.

But ye, I hear you and we try to do our best to keep the discussion forums as "virile" as possible :-)

...speaking of which.
Inasmuch as I don't run Vista or W7 and there seems to be little traffic in the forums that interest me, I'm pulling the plug and becoming a lurker.
May God help those toiling in the Nero mines:TTFN over and out.

OK, based on this thread, I'm trying to be a "kinder, gentler" DaiLun, but one look at the Tech Support forum and I find it very difficult to do so.

When you get posts like "speed up Win XP" or "What do three flashing lights mean", with no addl. information, I don't feel like getting into a "tug-of-war" trying to drag a meaningful description out of the poster.

If the poster shows a litle effort, I'm glad to respond in kind. Spoon feeding? That's a little different.

Ah, tech support is something completely different :-) It is an experiment we're conducting that will actually evolve technically quite a lot during the next couple of months. It is not a discussion forum and has quite a lot of differences compared to a discussion forum -- most notably, of course, the fact that you can post anonymously there. But also in a way that it allows only questions and answers -- you can't answer to an answer. And believe me, it will be moderated more harshly than aD's forums. Just in completely different way (I'm going through it personally, for now, every now and then and simply _delete_ stupid questions -- and stupid answers).
