divx-compiled dvd - no sound on 'divx ultra' dvd player

I used tmpgenc authoring works 4 to create a menu-driven dvd with 9 menu items. I created the 9 files (menu items) using virtualdubmod, applying filters and compression codecs (ffdshow for video - mpeg4 with divx handle; ac-3 acm for audio). Using simulation in tmpgenc everything works fine, except for a Dolby incompatibility which necessiated switching to MPEG-1 Audio Layer 3. The resultant dvd plays fine in the divx player, but when I plug it into a "divx ultra"-certified dvd player, I have audio problems. Video is perfect, but the audio is impossibly faint. Anyone have any ideas what's causing this problem? Couldn't google anything on this. Maybe somebody can link me up a thread dealing with this issue. Thanks.
