so i bought a broken ps2 slim off of ebay and need help fixing it. it will turn on every 3rd or 4th time you press the power button if the cd door is open and the laser asembly is pushed back. as soon as the cd door is closed the laser assembly moves forward and pushes against the cd drive motor and then the machine shuts down. has anyone had this problem before?

sounds really messed up. umm, why would you buy a broken ps2, or was it that the person who sold it left that part out? in any case, why does it push against the cd drive? it must be really messed up to do that.

Ive been waiting for a long time for this game, AND NOW IT KICKS A**!!!

to emulate a ps2 i need a ps2 bios. legally to have a copy of the ps2 bios i need a ps2 but it doesn't have to work and this one was real cheap because it didn't work. that is why i got it in the first place, that and i thought maybe i could try to fix it. im not sure if the laser is actualy pushing against the cd spinning motor but it turns off when it gets there. and i figured out it turns off when you shut the lid also. ive got it to play the first few seconds of a dvd by closing only one side of the lid. it has 2 plastic things that catch inside the case and hit a switch to tell the system the cd door is closed. if you push down one side and twist the lit slightly so the other one doesnt catch it will sometimes allmost work. everything is really intermittent. someone said i should check the surfacemount fuses on the back of the board but they seem to be ok. right now the plan is to make a freemcboot so it can boot off of the memory card and load games from the usb.

I would double-check the cables (esp. the one going to the moving bit with the laser)...one might be worn or damaged as to cause a short or an open circuit...or it might just be loose.
