I have an installer for USB PS2-Linux which should allow you to take a FAT-formatted (Windows FAT16 or FAT32) USB Flash Drive and put some files on it, run kloader2.0.elf (Mega Man's kernelloader) and with a few steps and about an hour install working PS2-Linux to the flash drive. My USB-connected hard drive didn't work during tests (IDE to USB converter not supported by PS2-Linux) but my flash drive works.
Still very much an beta code -
http://www.4shared.com/account/dir/87281...ing.html?rnd=64 Go to PS2Linux-Distro directory in 4shared. Download and read the (2) ps2linux-usbinstaller.txt file, download the ps2linux_v0.3.zip, unzip onto a single FAT partition USB drive (should be one folder /ps2linux), place the two large .bz2 (base and usrlocal) files in this folder. Follow the instructions in (2) ps2linux-usbinstaller.txt.
Post questions about PS2-Linux on psx-scene.com in homebrew forums for quick replies.
Your USB installer is great! Only, I get all the way to actually installing it, and nothing happens. When you're supposed to hit enter to begin the actual partitioning and installing, the thing just hangs, doesn't do anything, the usb HD isn't doing anything either.
Is there some crucial step you left out of your instructions?
My instructions and installer both are going through a (unfortunately slow due to many other things going on) overhaul. In the meanwhile, I've found one of the main things people miss is to place the two .bz2 files (DON'T RENAME THEM) into the \ps2linux directory on the usb device. However, if you can write down the errors (last few lines or so) and reply I would be able to help you better.
The latest version of my ps2-linux distro uses the left joystick of the gamepad as the mouse cursor controller, L1=Right-click, L2=Left-click. The 4shared link is a couple posts up.
In the instruction it says to connect ethernet cable between PS2 and your router, but I don't have a router, I have an ordinary network cable with which I access internet via LAN.
IP and DNS (LAN) are obtained automatically, do I need to modify those 5 linux installation files ?
And 1 more question, I have fat PALps2 with HDD, which config file do I need to select?
The version 0.8 of the installer was released yesterday, and means you only have to edit one file now. The downside is that it currently works for static IP addresses only. Once you boot, you can reconfigure to use DHCP if you are Linux-savvy.
Available at the 4shared link above...
It's still a little rough, but better than version 0.7 of my installer --- it's version 0.8 (yes, I think like Google I will always submit a beta)
Unpack to a USB drive so that it has a /ps2linux directory off of the root.
From the same 4shared site, in the
2010_Mar_base_and_usrlocal_package directory, download the two .bz2 files and put on the usb drive in the /ps2linux directory.
If you have a version 9 or greater PS2, you need to copy the LIBSD.IRX and SDRDRV.IRX from an old PS2 game like SSX or the original PS2 Linux Kit RTE (files dated in 2000 should be fine, some dated in 2001 are ok) - place these in the /ps2linux directory also.
Then edit the /ps2linux/install_config/ps2linux.cfg for your network and display configuration <-- IMPORTANT - it is ok to modify in Windows with notepad, just as it is ok in Linux with vi or vim. If you don't modify this file IT WILL NOT WORK unless you have exactly the same configuration as me, which is extremely unlikely. This is the only file you need to modify (as opposed to the version 0.7 installer).
From Ulaunchelf, run mass:/ps2linux/install_config/radshell.elf. Just press "y" when prompted, kernelloader will then start, and you will be prompted to enter the type of PS2-Linux installation - in your case "u" for usb installation.
IMPORTANT - USB INSTALLATION DOES NOT WORK FOR Version 14+ PS2 (Slim), for that I will be working on an updated SMB image at ps2.nuclearfall.com.
Good luck, this is beta so if you run into errors, post them and I'll try to fix them.
