Simple explanation that doesn't help anyone is to say that my Playstation 2 isn't working properly.
To be more precise, it works when it wants to. It will play some PS1 and PS2 games, but sometimes it won't. I'm guessing it's probably dirty, but I'm worried about taking it apart to clean it because maybe that isn't the problem.
I've bought new games and they won't play on my PS2 now whereas some of them did a couple of months ago. I can play the same games on my friends Playstations, so I know it's not the games themselves.
Is it risky for me to try to clean it myself or should I take it to someone else? Or are there other problems that it could be that I'm not aware of?

If you bought your PS2 new, and it wasn't sold as a modded model, then no, you don't have a mod chip. If you bought second hand, then you may have a mod chip. If it has been repaired, it may have had a mod chip installed.
