my ps2 wont play silver games or dvds, help?

ok i dug my old ps2 out to try to get back into ffxi, it will play ps1 games, black back games, it will play the blue back ps2 utility disks and play online viewer start up disk which is also blue, but it wont play dvds or the silver back ffxi game. now i tried most of the cleaning guides that ive seen on the net and adjustment guides for the laser, even the laser cd/dvd adjustments. ive spent way to much for the ffxi hdd, expansions, and network adapter to give up, should i buy a new laser, refurbished ps2, or is there other options here i dont see?
