I am having difficulty with my fat PS2. It's been going strong for about 7.5 years with no problems (other than not reading CDs) but suddenly I'm having a weird problem. When I start up the PS2, it doesn't spin the disc immediately; it waits about a minute before spinning the disc. Once the disc does spin, however, it reads the DVD game just fine. After it loaded, I used Swap Magic and played my beatmania game just fine. But according to my brother, he tried playing a different game, and experienced ridiculous loading times between screens. I will test other games later, but does anyone have an idea why my PS2 is waiting a while before spinning the disc?
So the problem has escalated. Now my PS2 won't start Swap Magic anymore, it just loops back to the Browser screen. I also tried playing DanceDanceRevolution X, and it played, but with ridiculous amounts of lag. So it seems like the laser has finally started to die, though I haven't received any disc read errors yet. So is there any way to revive my PS2 before it completely dies, or should I just go ahead and get a slim?
I checked ebay and the only laser replacements are for the slim model, so basiclly you are screwed. Just go ahead and get a slim-only, 99 bucks, or get a network adaptor and a hard drive and ply the games from that. So in conclusion you probbalby won't be able to play any disc games, but you can get a network adaptor and play your games of an hd, or just get a slim. Your choice.
