Hey guys. I received my swap magic discs and flip top cover appropriate for my version. I removed the original PS2 cover as necessary, careful not to pull out or tear the silver ribbon near the power button. I then carefully replaced the flip top cover (after removing the top of the disc tray that prevents the disc from being accessed with the flip top of course). I was following a tutorial that said to get the ribbon in on the side (otherwise it will be overtop of the spinning disc) without squishing it. How in the hell do I do this??
I did my best, replaced the top and plugged it in to test before screwing everything back together. It started up fine but will not read (orignal) discs. I have a nagging feeling it has something to do with the ribbon as I KNOW its squashed in there. Is there a trick to this? What else can be wrong?
A link with pictures would be really helpful in addition. I'm frustrated beyond belief.
I have soft-modded several PSPs and a Wii (and technically a DS, but not really any modding involved there) but never anything I had to take apart. I really don't want to mess this up.

Have you figured it out yet?
I kinda grabbed some tape and taped the ribbon along the side. I had trouble with it reading discs as well, but it was because of the discs weight being distributed incorrectly. I got two pieces of masking tape and have to tape each PS1/blue/purple disc in order for them to work--one strip parallel on each side of the center hole of the disc.
Here's that guide:

Also, here is a nastily long but helpful and with-some-pictures "Fixing PS2 Disc Read Error" Guide:

If you figured it out already, awesome. Otherwise, good luck!
