i want to play my ps2 online and i want to know if i absolutely need a microphone or any way of communication. also if my internet will get charged for that.

These days not a whole lot of people play PS2 online. I'm honestly not even sure of the status of most of the old game servers. I can however try to answer your questions. A mic is not necessary for online play, however, sometimes (rarely) people will vote you out of game rooms if you don't have the ability to communicate with them. As far as your internet bill increasing from online play, that all depends on your service provider, and service type. If you have bandwidth limits, and you surpass them, some companies will charge you for extra use. I personally have no bandwidth limits and can spend all day and night on the internet downloading/playing whatever I want without a care in the world. Playstation's network is free unlike Xbox live, which you need to pay a monthly/yearly fee. There are some games though (very few), that will charge you to play them online. This charge will not come in the form of a bill. Instead you will be required to purchase gaming cards from retail stores or buy online via websites.
