Hiya,

So I used to have a PS2 (Fat) and I played backups using Swap Magic, this was about 2 years ago. The PS2 broke so I brought a PS3 and been playing that since. Wanted to play a few of the PS2 classics (God of war :P) so I brought a PS2 Slim, so I was just wondering whats the current best way to play backups, havent really been up to late on any advancements in PS2 for a while so just wanted some info.

Im quite tech savvy so so really mind how technical it is, just I would prefer not to use swap magic everytime.

Cheers !

The best way anymore is too use your Swap Magic and install fmcb 1.8 and use esr r9b to play backups.

Now the only issue may be is what version slim did you buy. If its the newest SCPH 9000x model, only the ones with DATE Code 8b or under will work.
Any slim below 9000x models will work.

Just check out the 'Installation methods' and 'guides'

You will need to patch ISO images with Esr disc patcher 2.4a, then burn them with imgburn.

Well, the PS2 phat is not completely useless. Like smokyrain said, install free memory card boot, and use hdloader to boot ps2 games via hard drive. This way you can avoid wearing down the laser over time. The slim's laser are pretty faulty. If you occasionally use it for booting backups, you might want to consider installing a neo laser fix chip. Otherwise you'll end up having to replace the laser sooner than you expect.

Had to reply as you've omitted that the early PS2 slims require the laser fix so it's necessary to check as to whether one would be required or not depending on version

Some of the PS2 slim units are compatabile with IDE adapters. These solder to the mainboard, and allow you to connect hard drives up to 1TB filled with backups. These run without tasking the laser.

Of course:
PS2: $100
Modchip: $50
HDD Adapter: $80
HDD: $80

...at that point you can buy a PS3...but it won't play PS2 games at all, let alone backups.

Only the V12-V13 is compatible with hdd adapter, and they actually either use hddconnect or hddcombo which is expensive.

To find those Versions of PS2 you would need to look on Ebay. Personally its cheaper to find another FAT PS2 with hdd adapter.

The hdd adapter usually sell for about $45 on ebay, as I have bought and sold a few.

EB games or gamestop sell PS2 slim's for $60

MOdchips are not $50, unless your paying someone to install them.

If you read the first thread, the fellow has the PS2 slim already, and a PS3.

All in all, fmcb 1.8 is cheapest way to play backups. Discs are cheap to buy.
