So i recently purchased the model stated in the title and everything seems to be working; until i tried psx back-ups. I had the impression that the modchip would be able to play psx discs like the phat ps2 as it said it could play CDs, but i guess not (however the real ones do work).
Will i need to use the swap-disc option (or any other options?) if i want to play psx backups ? or is my chip a fake and it should normally be able to play?
thanks!

Try to click quickly twice the reset button.
That´s a way for several chips to read psx copies.
The copies must be burnt at the lowest speed available (with clone cd, you can record at 1X)
The quality of cds is the most important part, the cheaper ones usually don´t work, or just make the game freeze.
A modchip is supposed to make a psx game run.
If is a matrix, try to configure it.
Press at same time circle and triangle with the ps2 turned off, and then click on reset.
Wait a short time without loose the two buttons, and the menu of matrix will show up.

How did you burn your PS1 backups? What program, speed and what brand of discs did you use?
If you think you burned it correctly, press 'O' upon booting the backup to force PS1/DVD mode.

using Nero 8, usually at 8x with Sony, Acer and Mitsui discs (they used to work on my old ps1).
pressing "O" didn't work either...

To burn psx backups you must do it at least at 2X speed, no more.
Up to 4x some games work, and others don´t (this speed is good for ps2 backups).
Try to burn them with clone cd, as this program allows to record at 1x speed.
I think the best brand of your cds are the sony ones.
You may also try TDK, because they never failled me.

I have heard others who burn their PS1 backups that slow and they work, usually on the latest PS2.
I have always followed the old rule on this forum and others, to burn at 1/4 speed of the cdr.
I have always burned at 16x - 24x, but I use Alcohol 120 with playstation 'datatype' setting or I use clonecd
I use only Verbatim Cd-r on mine.
You may have to test a few out and see what works for you.

Sometimes, by my mistake, I have burnt some PS2 backups at 8x or more, and they usually freeze in the midle of game, or simply boot the gaame and stop before I can start the new game.
I simply copy the game from that bad disc to a new one, but with lower speed, and the problem always is fixed that way.
So... the low speed really works.
If you burn ps2 games with speed higher than 8x for sure you´ll get several faillures.
And with backs of psx, sometimes happened the same, I use Alcohol 120% too, but it only allows to burn at 4x speed the minnimum, and when I got a faillure, I simply coppied a new disc from the old one with clone cd at 1x, and all was fixed.
The brand and the quality of cd or dvds, is very important too.
The most versions of PS2, don´t accept dvd+r, and those that accept, don´t do it with all games.
Verbatin is a great mark for dvd and cd.
TDK is good too

Yes I know, you are talking about PS2 DVD games, to burn at 4x.
I have always had great success rate. I have been doing this a long time already.
Some have nothing but great success burning PS2 DVD games at higher speed, and working on newer slims.
All depends upon the discs you use, burner used and program.
There are guidelines, and then you have to test for yourself.
If you can't burn PS1 games faster than 4x, then that is because of your burner.
CD games, PS1 included are usually burned faster than DVD games.

There is a way to find out if its your modchip, or something missed in the installation, but its a bit of a process
You could install fmcb 1.8
Follow this installation - http://bootleg.sksapps.com/tutorials/fmcb/disc.php
And read the 'user guide' 1.8
Then you have to block your sensors, now in that model, some don't have the third sensor under the hinge , and some do
http://www.geocities.com/pstwoslimline/tapetissue.htm
Then you load up uLe, and set 'disc control' to 'on'
Then put Original PS1 disk in PS2
Load up uLe by pressing R1
Swap the disc for you backup
Then just go to Filebrowser, Misc, PS2 Browser
And your backup will load

I said Alcohol 120% allows to record at 4X, the minimum speed for cds... the maximum, goes a lot further.
Burner records at high speeds with no problem, eh...eh...
Sometimes the brand of cds or dvds have a word to say, about speed, too.
It´s recommended lower speed than 4X to psx backs, because psx works at 4X.
So... if the burning is made bellow that speed, the back up gets a little more quality.

Ok well I am only going by what you typed
"but it only allows to burn at 4x speed the minnimum" so I thought you meant thats what you burn at.
Anyway where have you gotten all this info to burn PS1 games so slow.
I have been doing this a long time, been on many forums, and have never seen that posted.
I will show the tutorials if you want.

It was all by experience.
I have almost all the best burners installed
Wasted a "fortune" with cds, just testing...
And I´m enough sttuborn to do it, eh...eh...
With some games I used more than 10 cds, to get a good result, trying different methods.
I have enough games for ps2 and psx, that I could buy a good brand new car with the money I spent on them.
And of course are all backed up.
At first I followed a few advices from forums, but all differed ones from anothers... everybody was right, and everyone was wrong... so I decided to investigate by myself.

Well thats exactly what I am saying.
Methods have been posted, but its better for the person to test a few themselves with different media, burn speeds etc.
Yes I have more games and consoles than needed I am sure, computers etc that if I added the costs up would be an awful lot of money.

I have a bunch of games, because video gaming was the best hobby I had in my whole life (49).
Didn´t rest while couldn´t grab all RPGs for psx and ps2 (had to import (order on e-bay) a lot of them, the NTSC ones)
It´s a lot better spend money with vgames, than with cigarretes, drugs etc... and is not bad for health!!!
With videogames I learnt a lot of english, as I´m addicted on RPGs, they have much text, and is a good way to practise.
I´m portuguese, and studied english at school and was 10 years in USA, but videogames were the best teachers that I had, believe me!!!

wow! thanks for the feedback!
i'll have to try and burn one at the slowest speed, but it seems a bit much if i were to reburn all my games...
swap disc seemed to be the best option...or maybe that one with the blocked sensors; i see a lot of how-to guides on youtube for that.

Yes your modbo 4.0 should just play PS1 backups with no problem, so I am thinking unless something is wrong with your modbo 4.0 install, then just try burning at different speed on good cd-r media.
Also I had linked everything for you to do the fmcb 1.8 install, including on how to block sensors.

But yes, youtube videos can be helpful also.
