PS2 Slim SPH 77001 DRE Error

Hi there, I've come across a strange error with my ps2 slim. I've tried adjusting the voltage, but that has not helped much (I've only tried a few positions, but pretty much covered the key positions).

Every time my ps2 tries to read a disc, it would just continue to spin the disc at fast and slow intervals (for games). When I try to play a DVD, it will read the DVD but only play up to a certain point. After that, it will freeze or just skip. I'm contemplating about just purchasing a new laser, but would I have to have the laser voltage adjusted on this new laser even if it's the same model as my current laser?
