I've been researching and performing trial and error adjustments to my factory ps2 slim V12 unit. Many people are saying when dual layer discs cause DRE's and cause the unit to start making a clicking noise = it's the laser travel gear slipping - I have found that sometimes it's the gear - but I have found that usually it 's the laser lifting and falling as it tries to focus on one - of the dual layers of information. In other words, the laser is going bad. My unit used to read GOW 1 and 2 with no problems when I used to play them a few years ago. Recently I wanted to replay the GOW experience and immediately began having DRE's. I took the cover off, (again) and re-cleaned everything and did a coverless trial test of both single and dual layer game discs. Mine loads fine with ALL single layer game discs. It was the laser eye, or lense, repeatedly raising and dropping as it tryed to read / seperate one the dual layers. The "clicking" started and was "audible" when the laser eye / (lense) quickly and repeatedly dropped to "hit" the lower position, or "bottomed out". I watched the screw and travel gears and they were not moving, or even trying to move, but the laser eye would quickly and repeatedly raise up and then fall - making the "click". I dont know if the laser eye or lense things is spring loaded or only work on a minature electromagnetic solenoid?? But I have cleaned the outer laser eye with a Q-Tip and iso alcohol several times over the years with DRE success (cover in place). Maybe I placed too much pressere on the lense as I was cleaning it and damaged the spring or solenoid?? Or maybe it's a common wear item. For all I know its a voltage / power problem with the laser circuitry ???? I found a complete new laser PVR802W replacement for $6.00 + shipping - going to try and replace it and see what happens.
If anyone has any other knowledge about my particular situation - please contact me

no emails allowed as per forum rules. dual layer is indeed harder to read being that the disc has two layers and have to read through the 1st layer to read the second. ps2 v12 also has some laser problems and laser fixes are normally put in. the post you can do is do a pot tweak on the laser, turn it a little at a time. google for a guide. Replacing laser should also help (obviously), but normally there is a anti-static point you have to unsolder.
