Hi friends,

I went to a Palika Bazaar in Delhi (India) today to find out the costs of modding a PS2. I got 3 different prices from 3 shops:
Rs 400 - 8.5856 U.S. dollars
Rs 500 - 10.73200 U.S. dollars
Rs 600 - 12.8784 U.S. dollars

Another friend inquired from Lajpat Nagar and got a price of:
Rs 800 - 17.1712 U.S. dollars

None of the shops are mentioning exactly what chip they are going to put in. The model that is currently selling officially in Delhi/India is SCPH 90004, datecode 9B. I got one such unit myself. All shops are saying that once you bring in your unit we will see what chip is compatible with it, and will put that in.

Now I am thoroughly confused. With such a big variation in the rates, from Rs 400 to Rs 800, what can I deduce? Can someone look at the prices and predict which shop would be putting in which chip, and which one of these predicted chips would be the one to go for?

Please reduce my confusion, if not remove it :)

I hope someone is able to help me out with this tough decision.

By the way, the prices I mentioned include the cost of the chips and the effort of the soldering. They will also demo the unit after finishing the modding, to show that it actually works.
After browsing some US sites, the commonly listed chips seemed upwards of 20-25 USD. But these prices are varying from 8.58 USD to 17.17 USD.

What is going on here? Help me understand it please!!!!!!!!

They probably import the mod chips in large quantity, therefore reducing the price.

I will ask my friend on here stormx3, and see if he will reply here.

Hi Smoky how are u???Well these days im in Aus and will be returning to India tommorow.

Regarding Mod Chip Rates:
Well it depends which one u r getting,U live in delhi and i dont know the prices there.I live in Lucknow and i got my modchip equipped in 700Rs.All the modchips here come from Delhi itself. The Modchip i have is matrix infinity latest one.I wud recommend u to get the same as it is compatible wid USB HDD so u can play games from it,as well as play original games, wid movies, songs, and other stuff wid the help of custom homebrew or software.
So overall if u will be getting a Matrix Infinity modchip in 700Rs den go and get it.Rates in US and other countries are 2 high with respect to India.(Once u get the modchip u can post another topic regarding how to install custom software and play games of usb hdd)

Thanks Stormx3 and Smokyrain for taking the time out to reply to my question.

I would definitely try to get the Matrix Infinity.

The only problem is that the shopkeepers at Palika Bazaar are not ready to tell which chip they are putting in. I had asked 3 of them, and all they would tell was that they would need to see my PS2 to determine which chip would work because different chips apply to different PS2 models. While that is a good logic, the irony is that only SCPH 90004 is selling in india, and the shopkeepers at Palika were also selling the same unit, but still they made those excuses for not divulging the chip details.

One shopkeeper also told me that with the new SCPH 90004 the USB HDD was not very successful. The games would load up very slowly and very few games would work. However, if it allows me at least watch my divx movie collection from my 500gb hdd that would be enough for me.

Another issue is that they would not install the chip in front of me. They would take the unit to their *backoffice* and I would have to wait in the *frontoffice* for the unit to be returned back to me. So if I want to look up the images of the chips on the net and verify before installation, that option is not available to me.

This raises another doubt about what if they replace some of the genuine components in the unit with imitation/cheap replica chips?

Maybe I just have to blindly trust them and hope that they put in the best chip available. But knowing the reputation of Palika Bazzar that would be hoping too much :(

Anyways, I just have to try out my luck.

First off, the chips available to you vary widely depending on your PS2 model. Out of the half dozen or so major mod chips on the market, any given model would probably only be able to use 2-4 of them. So it really is impossible to say anything unless they actually know what model your PS2 is. Look online, and you can find out what version your PS2 is (mine is a Version 7), then tell them at the bazaar. It's not really fair to make accusations when you're the one not supplying all the necessary information.

USB hard drives, from what I've heard, run fairly slowly on PS2's. If you want to run a hard drive, your best bet is to get an IDE hard drive and a network adapter, and use it with Free MCboot.

As far as doing the work in the back room... it requires taking the shell off the PS2 and soldering the chip onto the system. I'm going to go out on a limb and assume that their tools are in the back, and they don't want random people walking in and having to try to keep an eye on a stranger in their shop while at the same time, trying to weld your system without FUBARing it.

@ Greyfeld

He already knows what version PS2 he has.
He has the latest PS2 SCPH 90004

He won't be able to use fmcb 1.8 because his date code is past 8b

And we are talking about India. They could at least tell him what modchip is being installed.

SCPH 90004 is not version, it's a model number. I don't know about you, but I have no clue what version it is, I have to look it up online to find out. This may be the case with the vendors as well, one can't say for sure.

You don't need to know the technical jargon to be able to connect a mod chip, all you need is the instruction manual, and the knowledge of how to use a soldering gun.

SCPH 9000x is V18 of the PS2. yes its the last version out there.

And yes the vendors will know this too of course, as I do.

IT is easier in INdia to find someone too install a modchip, than to buy one and isntall it yourself.

Thanks Smokyrain and Stormx3,

I finally went to the market and got my ps2 modded.

Greyfeld, even a newbie like me knows that SCPH 90004 9B is sufficient information to specify which exact model one is using. This is a combination of the Model No, Country Code, and almost an exact qtr/year of manufacturing details. 90004 is version 18, being sold in India, and probably also UK, basically the PAL version.

Anyways, after modification, the NTSC games and backup games from the hawkers on the road is now working. However, I think I got cheated as the operation in the *backoffice* somehow changed my Mac ID of the LAN port. I think, they may have replaced some of the original parts with parts from some other unit which might be lying there in their warehouse. I can't prove it as they won't accept it.

Anyways, since my unit is now working with backup copy discs, I am trying to be happy.

The deal cost me 500 Rs, including the cost of the chip and the soldering.

However I still don't know what chip they have installed. I tried to boot my machine and when the Red light is on, I am trying to hold down the triangle and circle buttons but no menu comes up. So it is not a matrix clone/modbo chip. The shopkeepers were calling it Universal chip, but I don't know whether that is enough to identify what chip it is.

I am going to experiment by burning a cd/dvd of HD Advance or HD Loader and see if I can access stuff from a hdd connected via the USB port. If I am able to play movies from a USB drive, that also would be a good achievement.

Well I am glad you got mod chip installed.

It does suck to not know what mod chip though, so you can use it too the full advantage

Actually if they say 'universal' the modb 4.0 is universal

That just means that they will work in all PS2 versions.

The only way really is too take it apart and look at the mobo

Ok to play games off a USB hdd though, HDAdvance or Hdloader won't work... they are for an IDE hdd

Follow this method in my post

http://forums.afterdawn.com/t.cfm/f-50/p...806899/#4878401

You will need however to burn a copy of uLe 4.40, then you could use the 'Filebrowser' in uLe to browse to your USB drive - ule link

You can put the USBloader.elf on the USB drive along with the games.

Smokyrain,

You are a magician. Everyone in the market told me that PS2 Slim versions can't play games at all from the USB HDD. You made the impossible possible :)

Following your instructions, I first downloaded the ULE 4.40 CD image and created a CD. It did not work. Gave a black blank screen. I tried ULE 4.38 Cd image, that too did not work. I then created the ULE 4.40 CD again at a low speed of 10x and this one actually started up.

After spending some unsuccessful attempts at loading the USB disk, I connected my USB drive to the 2nd port instead of the 1st port and it showed up in ULE.

The next failure was related to OpenUsbLd which just kept showing a pink green pink and then black screen. Finally I checked and found another version was there on the site, named OpenUsbLd_USBA which u had suggested. I had actually picked up the wrong version in my hurry. OpenUSBLd_USBA managed to pick up the game GTAVC from the HDD.

I managed to run GTA Vice City from my HDD after copying it on the HDD from a cheap replica dvd using the USBUtil 2 program which u suggested.
Only issue is that this program takes a lot of time. I also tried to create the ISO from the DVD and then create the HDD copy from the ISO. That too was taking almost the same amount of time.

Now tell me, is there a way to run the ISOs directly from the HDD? Most of the torrents out there are ISO formatted copies. Do I have to convert each ISO/DVD/CD to the ul.xxxx format files to load them from the HDD? Am I getting too lazy :) ??
The OpenUSBLd project page showed a ISOFS keyword. Is that to load an ISO file directly from the HDD? Can you give some instructions on this as I am not able to get help from that page.

Also is there a way to completely avoid using the ULE CD image and put everything on the memory card? I want to avoid using the DVD drive completely if possible. i.e. load the ULE and OpenUSBLD from the MC and then launch the games from the HDD, completely eliminating the DVD from the picture. I want to save the life of my laser... May be I am getting too greedy :)

Thanks a lot for your magic.

I actually never plug my usb in, until uLe has loaded.Wait a couple secs and it will see it. It is strange that way for me also.

That is the only way running games off the USB works, is to copy from ISO to the ul.xxxx format.

There is something new going on, and I haven't really kept up with it.
It looks like they are loading ISO over the network to the PS2

You would have to read from that page on, and click on the link in Bootlegninja's post

If your scph-90004 wasn't with that date code 9b, then yes.
Fmcb 1.8 won't work on that Date Code

If we knew you had a modbo 4.0 or similar modbo, then you could install the Matrix infinity manager, and then install dev 1 , thus allowing you too boot from the memory card.

The only way I guess to know is too look at the chip or try installing it.

The tutorial is here if you want to check it out - link

One question.. may sound silly.

What is SMB?
The thread on compatibility mentions
Open USB-Loader SMB Game-compatibility

I have OpenUSBLD now, but not sure what is SMB.

Also, is there any place where I can get links to the compatible games for download? Not sure whether this question is allowed in this forum though.

Ok this explains SMB better than I can - wiki

So to use SMS player for an example

You have to use Notepad to make a file called SMS.smb
It is explained here - link

You then place it in the SMS folder on your memory card, and the SMS player will see it.

Now for the OPNUSBLDr73.ELF you need to create a folder or share a drive and name the share 'PS2SMB'

You also need to use Notepad and create an IPCONFIG.DAT file and place it in your SYS-CONF folder on the PS2 memory card.

An example pasted in notepad is like below:

192.168.1.41
255.255.255.0
192.168.1.1

This thread shows exactly how to create it and save it - link

I have tested a couple games this way over the network, but I am not one of their testers so don't have access to their latest rev.
I found the videos slow yet, but gameplay was fine.

Now in the PS2SMB folder or drive, you could use USBUtility and create the USB games, so the OPNUSBLDr73 will see the games on your network.

I am running Windows 7, and I didn't have to use any .smb file for the OPNUSBLDr to see my shared folder on the pc side.
I don't think in Windows Xp, that you need it either.
