I received a ps2 from a co worker as a gift and he claims that it is modded and plays burned ps2 games.

And it doesn't play burned games. I burned GTASA and MvC2 using both nero and alcohol 120% with no luck. When i stick it in the ps2 it says please insert a PlayStation or PlayStation 2 game.

So i have taken the thing apart to find the "mod" that he was talking about and I have found no chip. The only difference from a stock ps2 (i think?) is this purple wire soldered on. See picture.

Besides that, my co worker gave me a usb plugin that has been cut. he told me that the solders were torn off during storage and i needed to solder black to green and white to red which i have done.

is this even a real mod? if it is what am i doing wrong?

Looks like that it was once modded but it isn't anymore. If you want to mod it though I suggest FMCB. Its a memory card mod.

Make sure that you also solder on the ground from the USB, or it won't work. Not sure what the purple wire is for, but it clearly isn't a mod to play copied games. If the USb port is a third port, then this might be what the wire is for. Please post back if if this is the case, as I have not seen such a mod before.
