v12 slim ps2 laser burnout concern

I'm looking for ways to play my backup games, and settled on a usb harddrive. From what I've heard though, the usb thing in the ps2 sucks and things like cutscenes in games won't play properly.

Simple, I thought. Just put in my backup disc for cutscenes/ect and go back to playing from the harddrive after.

Not only will this be vastly annoying, it circumvents the whole reason I'd get a usb harddrive: no worries about burning out my ps2's laser.
If I do decide to do this anyway, is it "safe" to play backup games on a ps2 like this for 20-30 mins at most? I have no laser fix installed, obviously.


Any alternate suggestions for someone who doesn't have the money to pay someone to mod a ps2 and has no experience soldering computer hardware would be nice too.
