To identify what I have recorded on a DVD, I have been using a Sharpie fine tip marker. Recently a friend of mine has informed me that this is a 'no-no' and that I'm destroying my discs. I'm not experiencing any problems with playback, but now I'm wondering if maybe I'm shortening the lifespan of my collection. Is my friend just paranoid or am I doing something bad to my discs??

Hi,

DVDs use two protective coatings over the reflective layer so sharpies are fine.

This theory is carried over from the old days when some folks figured that acidic inks broke down the unprotected reflective layer on CDRs :)
