DVD backups in Playstation 2 50002

Hi, I have a Playstation 2 50002 model that supposedly supports DVD-RW/DVD+RW format. I copied my Tekken 4 game onto a DVD-R using Nero, but got the red cloudy screen that says 'Please insert Playstation or Playstation 2 format disc'. So I tried copying it again using a DVD+RW disc but got the same message. What am I doing wrong? Does this Playstation still require a mod chip?

First, when they say it supports these formats, it only works for movies if you don't have a mod chip/swap discs so you do need some kind of mod to play with copied games.
