DVDSHRINK AND A HARD DRIVE PLEASE LOOK!!!!

Anytime i get to the backup part of making a dvd it encodes it and when it gets to 3% i get a error something about cant write to device(the hard drive). Plus sometimes i get a blue screen saying cant write to disk(hard drive). Whats up with that???? Is there a software i can test my external hard drive? What can i do before i take a baseball bat to my external hard drive????!!!!


BTW the hard drive is a Maxtor 3000LS connected by usb and it does work with windows98 until i reformated it....
