I have been using Xpress and X-Copy for almost a year with little trouble, but recently I am having burn problems...either failed burns or discs that freeze in playback....so I decided to try DVD Shrink and DVD decrypter. I have no trouble navigating through the software but when I try to burn, it makes it about halfway through the burn and there is a write error. I do not know the specifics, but it seems that I read something that said 'error: drive reset' I also have tried to use Nero (not sure which version, but older) and have had the same results. My point is: no matter what I use to burn, it has the same problem 90% of the time.

I am using Fuji DVD+R discs and have never had trouble with them until recently. I have a Dell Pentium 4, 256mb, plenty of drive space, etc.

Have you got any other apps running during the burning process?. I, personally, switch off everything during Ripping/transcoding/burning.

It may also be an idea to upgrade your burner firmware, if applicable.

Does this problem occur with other brands of media?

I apologise if you have tried all of the above.

Looking for my old AD

Thanks for the reply.

No other apps are running when burning.

I will look into updating the burner firmware. Is that as easy as doing a search by the brand and model number? I hope that is the problem and that simple of a solution, but I am curious as to why it would work in the past and now have trouble...and the update would solve it. I am not questioning the idea...just curious about the theory as to how the update will (or could) help.

Tripdaddy,
A firmware updates allows the burner to recog. different blank media so that the burn will be successful. What could have happened is Fuji could have used a different supplier to do the blank media and even though it is branded Fuji it might not be really manuf. by Fugi. D/L DvdinfoPro ( free )and it will tell you who the real manuf. of the blank media really is.

OK...I updated my firmware and tried different media (Sony) and still received the same error about half-way through the burn..where it happens each time. Here is the record of the process and the error I received. Does any of this help more sense of what is happening?:

Tripdaddy ,
You are getting this error code if I read it correctly

SCSI Exec, HA 1, TA 1, LUN 0, buffer 0x01A05000
Status: 0x04 (0x01, SCSI_ERR)
HA-Status 0x00 (0x00, OK)

Sense Key: 0x05 (KEY_ILLEGAL_REQUEST)

Also : DiskPeripheral : Maxtor 4D040H2 atapi Port 0 ID 1 DMA: Off
I think that HD needs to be in DMA

Looks like there is a conflict between the hardware and the program. Are you using an external burner? If so can you take it to a friends computer and see if it will burn a DVD there.

If the HD needs to be in DMA, how do I change this?

It is an internal drive, so taking it to another computer would be a challenge....hoping to solve the problem before that attempt.

Also, I have several burning programs: Roxio, MyDVD, DVDit, DVD-X Copy, DVD-X Copy Xpress, Nero, Decrypter, DVD Shrink...I think that is all. Could these be conflicting with each other? I recently added Decrypter and Shrink, but I was having the problem before that. But it WAS working fine with all the other programs. In essence, it started to give me problems without any change being made on the computer...at all. NO other software installed at the time the problem started to occur.

Nero and roxio are known to conflict with each other. try disabling one or the other.

As for enabling DMA:

How do I enable DMA for my hard drive/DVD-ROM drive under Windows XP?

Recent hard disks, DVD ROM drives and CD ROM drives support DMA transfer, as a method of improving drive performance.

DMA transfer may be required in order to achieve the best results for capturing video, or playing DVD movies.

To manually enable DMA transfers, adjust the properties of the IDE Controller, in Device Manager.
Open DEVICE MANAGER.
Click on the plus (+) sign beside IDE ATA/ATAPI CONTROLLERS.

Right click on the appropriate IDE channel (Primary or Secondary).
Select PROPERTIES from the pop-up menu.
Select the ADVANCED SETTINGS tab.
Set the "Transfer Mode" to "DMA if available". Device 0 is the MASTER device on the IDE channel in question. Device 1 is the SLAVE.

Click OK to accept the change.
Re-boot the system for the change to take effect.

Hope this Helped. Post back and let us know if this worked.

Thanks Geestar 20...I will give it a try tonight!

How do I 'disable' one of the programs without uninstalling it?

if you have your serial number to either one then don't worry about loosing it since you can reinstall later if you like one program over the other.

I once deleted stuff from Nero folder that I shouldn't have and so Nero wasn't working properly, I uninstalled Nero then re-installed and Nero automatically entered my serial for me and I was all set up with no hassle.

So you should be all good.

Tripdaddy,
Below are 2 parts of Roxio and Nero that could be causing the conflict
Roxio: Direct CD or Drag to Disk: These are applications from Easy CD Creator from Roxio. This package will load a packet-writing software that will constantly talk to your CD/DVD writer, and can cause a number of issues while trying to write a disc. Disabling this software is not enough, as a portion of this package is always running after you start windows. To remove them you need to do to Add or Remove Programs in the Control Panel. There you can select Easy CD Creator to change, not remove. Then you must click next until it gives you the option to modify. Then either Direct CD or Drag to Disk should be selected and changed to "make this option not available". Then click next and while the program may look like it is installing, it is removing those options. One thing to remember is that both Direct CD and Drag to Disk will not be installed at the same time.

Nero InCD: This is packet writing software that comes bundled with Ahead Nero Burning Rom. This package will load a packet-writing software that will constantly talk to your CD/DVD writer, and can cause a number of issues while trying to write a disc. Disabling this software is not enough, as a portion of this package is always running after you start windows. You will need to uninstall it in Add/Remove programs, then reboot to remove it.

Hope this helps

Nero InCD: I downloaded Nero 6....does it come with that download? I have never seen that name so I do not know if I have it. Is it a part of Nero or a separate program?

Thanks....will try those tips too.

Tripdaddy,
I think it is the 3rd Module in Nero Ultra. If you D/L'd the whole program then you probably D/L'd it. Go to start Search and then search for INCD.

The newestversion of Shrink is made to work with Nero 6 if you have an older version (which you said you do) you need to get the new version. Or you can download Decrypter and do it the FREE way. Just DL Decrypter and set Shrink to Burn with Decrypter.

Ok...after talking with Dell, I reset some of the drivers to original settings and uninstalled all of my burning software and only reinstalled Nero, DVD Shrink, DVD Decrypter, and DVD X-copy....mainly getting rid of Roxio...I did a burn last night of some of my kids' DVDs (short ones) and all worked fine...will be trying a full length movie tonight.

Here is another question:

What is the advantage to using DVD Decrypter when Shrink does that too? And why use Nero to burn when you can burn with Shrink and Decrypter?

Tripdaddy ,
All DVDDecrypter does is rip the movie and it can also burn the image once DVDShrink has compressed the image ( .iso mode) DVDDecrypter does not compress.

You can use Shrink to rip the movie but every now and then there is a movie it can not do and that's when you use DVDDecytper to rip the movie.

Nero does many more things than just burn and movie but if you are happy using DVDDecrypter to burn there is nothing wrong w/ that

For ME DVD Decrypter is like a spare tire, you may not need it but it's there just in case one of your other tires blow's out and you may need it to backup.

You get what im say'n
