Max smoothness or max sharpness?

Im pretty sure this topic hasn't been discussed thoroughly ( i did a search on aec but only 2 threads came up).
Ive tried max sharpness but at times, my dvd copy is jumpy when i play it on my dvd player. How does max smoothness work? i read on an earlier post that max smoothness is the best. does it blur the images to keep the video smooth? or should i stick to using just the default sharp setting?

Hi frag2. :)
I'll assume that by "jumpy" you mean the video seems to "pulse".
If it's a bit jumpy, try the "Sharp" setting.
If it's quite jumpy, try the "Smooth" setting.
If it is very jumpy, try the "Maximum Smoothness" setting.
On the other hand, if by "jumpy" you mean the video skips frames, freezes, lose audio, etc etc, my guesses would be:
1) mediocre to bad media:
- try another brand of media.
- burn at a lower speed.
- reduce DVD Shrink Target Size to about 4200MB, ("Edit >> Preferences >> Target Size >> Custom") so the edge of the disc will not be written to.
2) heavily fragmented hard-drive.
3) use of the computer for other tasks during the burning process (to be avoided).

frag 2, I prefer max smoothness in the AEC setting undre quality settings, it seems to deliver the best picture.

Question for you BigO,
What is it that Shrink actually does different between the Sharp and Smooth settings?

Nephilim , if you don't mind me replying...
"Maximum Sharpness" will try and reach DVD Shrink target size by compressing B-frames almost to their maximum compressability (as measured by DVD Shrink analysis).
If the target size cannot be reached, it will then start compressing P-frames, followed by I-frames.
"Maximum Smoothness" will try and reach the target size by spreading compression more evenly between frame types.
"Sharp" and "Smooth" are gradual variations ("in-betweens"), lowering the threshold at which I-frames and P-frames start to be compressed.
In all settings, an error-correction algorithm is used, so as to minimize the propagation of errors between frames.
P.S: this might not be 100% technically correct, but that's the way I understand it. :)

Actually Denis, it was a better answer than I would have given.
I will say since trying the max smoothness setting the picture is better than at the sharp(default) setting.

Unfortunately, it is not as str8 forward as that (in terms of what setting gives the best results).
For example:
During beta-testing, I mainly used LOTR-FOTR as my test "subject" (60.4% if I recall correctly).
I found that on some scenes, mainly "slow" and/or dark scenes, the "Maximum Sharpness" version was for all intents and purposes indistinguishable from the original.
The "Maximum Smoothness" one, while still very good, was slightly softer, and not as close to the original.
For the majority of these scenes, "Sharp" was the best compromise.
On other scenes, mainly those with layers of smoke, and/or fairly bright backgrounds, "Maximum Sharpness" tended to introduce a very noticeable amount of "macroblocking".
"Maximum Smoothness" did too, but to a much smaller extent.
For the majority of these scenes, "Smooth" was then the best compromise.
So which setting to choose when backing-up the whole movie?? lol
I'm trying to get some DVD Shrink users to conduct some comparison tests between AEC settings. ;)
