I just recently bought a new Sony DVD +- R/RW drive and have been burning DVDs since with Decrypter and Shrink. No problems at all, except for a few DVDs. Out of say 10, 7 have worked perfectly. I'm wondering if it's the DVD itself, because I've tried twice on each of the ones causing my problems. I am trying to backup Ocean's Eleven, Training Day and Friday. Those are the three causing me problems. I back them up and put them in the DVD player and they work fine. It's when I try going past about the 10 or 11 scene, then I get a "Disc Read Error". I have tried backing them up the exact same way I do the others, in other words, I did nothing different from the way I was backing up the others. Anyone know why this is happening, and if I was to use another program, could that help or not? If you know how to fix this, please let me know. Thanks!

hi WhiteRob
What brand of media are you using?Im guessing its an el cheapo brand.Try ritek go4 or verbatim.
7 out of 10 is not a very good ratio.
good luck

I bought 25 Memorex DVD+R 4x for $25 at Futureshop the first day I had my burner, came home and looked on this website to find I may have gotten the wrong kinda disc. Well I backed up a movie, it didn't work in my PS2 (version 10) or my Goldstar DVD I bought 4 years ago so I thought I was out $25. I changed the burn speed to 2x on my software (B's recorder gold that came with the burner) and now the movies work fine. My question is whether I should try other media format like DVD-R or other brands if Memorex works fine for me now. I'd just like to go cheper if I could.

I would stay away from the Memorex DVDs. I used to use them with mixed results, mostly bad. You can still buy quality media for around the same price. There is no point in going through the process of backing up if you are going to put it onto bad media, trust me I did the same thing for awhile. Also I would recommend burining at 2X. Burning at 2X with good media (Ritek or Verbatium) will help prevent many playback problems (skipping or freezing).

like dvd4life says, stay away from memorex.Memorex is made by who ever will do it for them at the time.If you happen to get the cmc version of memorex your screwed!! (cmc= classic media crap)
To answer your question,if you have dvd players that old, then the -r format is the way to go.I use the -r because I have 3 panasonic 5 disc changers that dont like the + r stuff.
Lowering your burn speed may help also.
You can get the ritek go4 for under 60 cents usd. a piece when you buy a hundred or more.Meritline, rima, and newegg, are just a few places you can order them online.

Ok I am using Memorex DVD+Rs and the majority work fine. I'm wondering if it's because I'm playing them on my PS2, rather than a real DVD player? I think the DVD player on my PS2 is farely new though, cause when I bought my PS2, I got the one with the Adapter kit, that was recently put out...

I just ran a read error test on a memorex DVD+R I backed up a movie on and there were no errors. I also have a newer PS2 (version 10, last Christmas). Did I just luck out on the media type with this pack of Memorex? I'm gonna test some more backups, but is using DVDINFO a good way to test it?
It is also the RICOHJPN media type which is bad I think?
Basically I'm looking for a good media that will work on most media mainly my PS2, older DVD player and occasionally newer DVD player.

Nope, RICOHJPNR01 is good stuff. Even Ritek 4X +R media ID's as such.

If you can change the booktype setting to dvd-rom, then dvd+r is the way to go, will work in almost any dvd player. I just got a 100 pk ritek dvd+r (media code ricohjpn01 02) for 34 cents a disc from newegg.

No they were just labeled ritek dvd+r (figured they would either be ritek g03 or ricohjpn got lucky and got the ricoh). The g04's are -r media. These ricoh's although coded at 4x actually burn better at 8x. I love em. The sale ended on 8/15/04.

Pretty sure that is correct, could be wrong. I said in another post ritek dvd+r was probably ricoh or ritek g03, I meant ritekr0x.

You need to have a bitsetting tool in order to do this. I have one patched into my firmware that I got from another forum. I think this can be done with nero too, but I have never done it through nero. You might read through the nero help manual to see how to use their tool.

Ok, this got way off topic. Anyways, I just bought a 50 pack of Sony DVD+R, because Best Buy was having a sale on the for $44 for 50, is this good? Also, are the SONY DVD+Rs good media for backing up DVDs?

Those are probably pretty good. Run one through dvdinfopro and see what the media code is to be sure. That will tell us a lot more. They are still pretty pricy though.

Incidentally, to change the book type of a +R you must also have a burner that supports that. I know that Lite-On will and Pioneer won't. Can't say about other brands since I've only had the two.
