I've read that a problem for some cd-r based games is that the TOC is to high so thats why it doesn't load or a black screen comes up. Can this happen to DVD+r backups to?

Yes it can. It depends on what method you are using to boot backups. The Swap Magic DVD's usually don't have this issue with DVD backups, just CD's.
