I just got an NEC 2500A and neither the Roxio software that came with it nor the WinDVD Creator that came with my Convertx will allow me to choose 8X as a burn speed?

Any ideas?

Thanks

What brand/type media are you using?

The decision of what speed to burn is made by the burner not the software and is based on the quality of the media.

I have a NEC 2510A and it is the same with Nero 6. This is down to the media as Nephilim said. You need to use a quality Ritek 8 speed media to get the best results. Some media will only be detected as a 2 or 4 speed with a NEC drive if the media is not suited to the drive.

That's interesting.
I got some (relatively) cheap Memorex from BB.
It is "supposed" to be 8X media.

I probably got that CMC crap! My luck!

What's the best national chain (or web site) to buy media from?

Where do you live myself or someone else may be able to put you on to a local web site in your area.Obviously delivery would be much quicker then.

I get my RiDATA media from either http://www.newegg.com/ or http://www.rima.com/ . Both are very reputable e-tailers :)

I had the 2500a now I have the 2510. As stated above media is the key to faster burns. I've used the "cheap" stuff in a pinch without making a coaster but to burn at 8x you need the "good" media. newegg.com is great, fast shipping, good prices and most of the time free shipping.

Thanks for the info, guys. I am a big fan of newegg.com that's where I bought my burner.

I didn't think to check their prices on media.

Good to know.

I just bought a ND-21500A dvd/cd writer from newEgg too. Windows XP does not recognize the drive. Does anyone know if there is a driver that is needed? (the burner came with no instructions or software) I went to NEC's site, and they don't list a driver for this model. They just say that they don't sell these drivers to private individuals. Any suggestions are greatly appreciated! thanks!!

Make sure that the jumpers are set correctly on the unit (e.g. master or slave) and make sure that the cable connections are secure.

I too own a NEC 2510A, but cannot get a good burn with Ritek G04's (-r), at 4X. When +r's are used, very little problem up to 6X. So far, 3 good burns with -r, 10 coasters. Firmware is 2.16, AMD 2400, 768 meg DDR, XPPRO, Nero 6.3.1.20. Burner is Secondary master, no slave.
System literally locks up at 1% completion, writing lead-in.
Any suggestions? I will try different media in the next day or two. Thanks
