shintaro dvd-rw disc.How do I know if it is faulty?

I am very new to this burning business. After making a pile of coasters I decided to avoid this by using a rewriteable disc. Whenever I put this disc in, and check disc info it says the disc is empty and it has the full capacity to write on. When I try a burn, it quickly says something like laser error.
I only bought 2 of these "shintaro" brand discs. The second one seems to be working. Is the error one faulty?? How do I tell.
Does anyone have that link to the disc checker to tell which disc is made by whom?

Where are you from? Australia by the sounds of the brand.
What are you burning on to the disks?
Also what drive are you using?

I purchased 2 of these disks recently too (from JB HiFi) - 1 was ok for 1 or 2 burns, then it died like yours...the other is still going strong.

Jabba 2004, Yes, coincidentally, I bought my 2 discs from JB Hi Fi as well. Maybe they have 50% un reliability?

Hey Fellow Aussies.
Sorry to hear you're having problems, but its most probably the inferior disc's you are using :(
Unfortunately Shintaro disc are mostly just re-badged Princo Discs and the dvd-rw shintaro discs are just bloody awful! You might be able to use them for data backups, but thats about it in the long run.
If you want good, cheap dvd-r (for video purposes), buy some A grade Taiyo Yudens or Riteks, you have to buy them online mostly (but from good Aussie websites). Here's some links to some sites I buy my discs from.

(buy Ritek G04 for 4x discs and G05 for 8x speed).
If you want to buy your discs from a store, A grade Taiyo Yudens are available from The DiscShop stores in Queensland. Gamedude in Queensland sell Ritek A grade discs too

Also http://www.pcx.com.au allows you to pickup the discs from their store/depot in most capital cities.
Other Computer stores around the country sell Ritek or Taiyo Yuden DVD discs, so have a look around.
But online prices are definitely cheaper!
As for JB HIFI, its a great store/s, but for DVD discs, stick to buying Sony or Verbatim discs, and for RW's just stick to Verbatim. I know that the Tdk or Maxwell DVD-r ( and various other brands) are sometimes good, but it just depends on where the discs are actually made, it that particular batch is Taiwanese made, the quality can vary greatly.

As far as telling if your DVD-RW disc has burn faults, you can use Nero CD-DVD Speed , which is part of Nero Burning Rom, (or DVDinfopro) to check for errors on your disc.
Also, if you haven't already, do a full erase of the DVD-RW, and see if it'll work after that. I'd stick to burning just data with it through, not DVD-Video.
Other than that, I dunno or I can't seem to remember, how you'd check to see if it's faulty.

I have looked at the media sites in Oz and they look pretty poor.
Do you guys use Google to find sites for media or other ways such as yellow pages or Hardware sites?

I got some recommendations from some mates, plus I live not to far from a pcx.com.au depot, so i just went in there one day and bought some stuff from them, and I was very happy with it.
I've personally bought media off all the places I've posted, plus I also buy direct from Utech Australia (Australia's Offical Ritek Supplier) and a few times from ebay.com.au (which has some very good sellers from down Melbourne and Sydney way).
As for the PC hardware stores, they're places I buy my hardware from, and I've just bought discs in there when I was short of media, etc.
If you know where to look, good media can be had for a decent price. Who's cares if the sites look crap, as long as they deliver, eh?

Well I think people need to know where to look!
Maybe it's time for a proper media store to open in Australia? With good products (Ritek, Verbatim, Optodisc)
I didn't think you could buy directly from U-Tech?
PS. I feel that a good site is important as it is half the battle of keeping a customer!

You can buy from Utech, just send them an email, and they'll get you sorted, you have to buy at least a 100, through.
I've heard rumors of a current online store (well mostly online) going into retail shops, but this late at night I just can't seem to remember the name. Hopefully it'll happen.

What do you mean by a real live media store? Do you mean a dedicated online media reseller that sells only recordable based products?
I'd like to know the name of that online store that might be selling into retailers!
