Hi am new to dvd video writing, hope someone can help me out.
basically i have a load of avi files that are definitely not 100% dvd quality but are nonetheless of good quality. what i want to do is burn them to a dvd video disc but only as the quality that they need to be, for instance it would be no good me encoding it as a 100% dvd quality dvd as the original file is no where near that. So what i'm looking to do is get as many of the files on 1 dvd without wasting space. How do i find out what to encode it as (audio and video) so that it is the same specs as before?
Also any chance sum1 could just quickly go through how dvd shrink works, or i'll just look it up my self whichever lol. also how easy is it to put the individual files on the dvd as seperate chapters?
Your ultimate goal is to watch the AVI's on your standalone player, yes?
If this is the case I would suggest trying TMPGEnc to trancode them to MPEG-2. It has three different options for DVD/NTSC so I'm sure there will be one to best suit your needs. This page will give you the basics on how it works:
Once TMPGEnc has done it's thing you should have an mp2 file and an audio file which can now be added, along with others, into TMPGEnc DVD Author in order to add a menus and put the files into the correct DVD format ready for shrinking or burning. Here's a guide:

thanks a lot mate that has clarified some stuff for me!
however, how do i know which quality to convert my avis to so as to not waste any space on the dvd, so i can get maximum stuff on it. bcos the AVI files i have are more vhs quality, and i thought u cud fit more on a dvd if the quality was less. obviously i'd rather have an exact method of finding out which mp2 bitrate to convert it to instead of experimenting. any suggestions?
