THANKS PETE! I've had a DVD burner for over six months and gave up on it long ago. Since my initial purchase, I've built another computer and thought I'd go at it again. Once again, no luck, not with Nero, Roxio, or the TDK software suite the burner came with -- oh Pinnacle too.

Still can't believe your intructions produced a copy on my first try. Thanks again!

michigan,

I know exactly where Big Sandy is - if you've ever been there they have a large shell factory there. Shells are taken from the river and ground up then sent to Japan where they're placed into oysters to make cultured pearls.

Anyway, keep me posted :)

Pete

tyeshab04,

No competition. If you followed my guide exactly, you'd have a backup. What media are you using ?

Pete

tyeshab04,

Taiyo Yuden are a pretty good media, so I've been told. It could be that your firmware isn't setup to recogonize it. Try one of the others I recommended, Verbatim, TDK, Sony RiData OR Ritek G04's.

I've got faith in you Buddy, keep your upper lip stiff :)

Pete

,

Roxio + (plus) Nero = Trouble :(

Roxio doesn't get along with many other backup proggys -

Try uninstalling it by going to - Start, All Programs, Orxio, uninstall Roxio THEN run Roxio Zapper.

Remove all types of Roxio tentacles and tendrils with Roxio Zapper -

Find it here:

http://www.microadvantage.net/downloads/zapper60.zip

After you've done that and rebooted your system to flush it all out, print out a copy of my guide and have a go at it again :)
Cheers,

Pete

Competition? Nah, that wasn't my post. That was from Newfee. I am thankful for the both of you for helping me out the way you did. I really appreciate it *kiss*

However, the realization of how much of a goober I am has dawned on me! I went back thru BigOrange's instructions and found out the reason I was getting the I/O error. I had the box to burn using Nero checked and I had uninstalled the software a couple of days ago. Once I unchecked the box, I haven't recieved the error again and have backed up 3 DVDs with no coasters *yyyyaaaayyyy*

Thank y'all once again! LoL...If it wasn't for you guys, this DVD burner would be on the way back to the manufacturer!

OH, really? my issue is cheap media? hahahahahaa -- sorry to insult your reading eyes, but i bought them at cvs. ok. well, unfortunately, computer programs never just Say "we don't like your media." ah well. i'll be back when i get the dvds in the mail, to let you know how it works out...
but i think my dvd burner is +/- so it should use both kinds, but how do i make sure it really is +/- and not just one of them? the actual drive just says it's RW. thanks!

Way to go tyeshab04 ! !

Now that you're doing well, that doesn't mean it's time for you to leave - this is a give and take kind of deal - we had fun with you, now you get to have some fun yourself :)

It's people like you who make this site work - You've seen how we work and, you see we had fun doing it -

Now it's your turn, stop back when you're free and help someone else - You'll have fun and a chance to learn some more, (teaching is a learning experience too you know) the people you help will appreciate it and it will make you feel better :-)

Then you can "Welcome" them into our little Club :D

We hope to see you around when you're not having problems to solve -

You'll find us hanging out, over there by the water cooler under the potted palm, chewing the fat and trying to help the next Newbie with the weight of the burning world upon their shoulders -

We'll be looking for you -

Cheers,

Pete

Where did this come from ?

I went back through this entire thread, all (5) pages and saw nothing posted by you at all.

May I ask to what, in the good Lord's name, are you replying ?

Tyeshab, you rat,LOL, I specifically asked you if and I quote Hmmm, so you followed the guide exactly?

Did you have auto burn with Nero enabled when you tried to burn with decrypter?

I'm gonna have to get my wife to punish you, she's very good at punishing(well me anyway,LOL)

I am glad you got it burning, both for your sake and mine, I wasn't gonna let it go. Now, at least when you try to help someone you'll have the entire checklist to give them. ;)

Oh yeah, make sure they follow the directions to a "T". heh heh See ya. ;)

Pete your family is fine, that part of the state didn't get hit as hard and as a matter of fact we didn't get as much as they predicted.

There is a lot of flooding but the worst is over and I'm back on line.

BTW, I wonder where his post came from also, left field?

hi -- so i've gone through all these pages and was abs. saved by the lesson from scubapete on the DVD Shrink and decrypter. but now i have a problem - everything went really smoothly with DVD Decrypter starting up on its own from shrink, etc., but when i put in the blank dvd, decrypter opens a message windo and says
"I/O Error!" and lists the device and scsistatus (??) and says "Interpretation: Check Condition" and then
"CDB:" a whole string of 0's and 2's and then "Interpretation: Write (10) - Sectors: 0-31" and then
"Sense Area: ..." and a really damn long string of 0's and a few other numbers scattered in -- then it says "Interpretation: Cannot Write Medium -- Incompatible Format"

SO I'm wondering what is going on because the Interpretations don't tell me much. Also the program has a woman's voice that says "OH NO" if something goes wrong and it kind of freaked me out. anyway i've been working on this alllll night and i'm frustrated, but i'm sure any help would be great.

Thanks--

This usually means that you're dealing with a crappy media.

I covered all this on page 3 of this thread - Check it out !

I'd rather you go back one page rather than have me re-type it all over again just for you - You understand, don't you ? :)

Cheers,

Pete
Um, I posted this question yesterday and got this response from ScubaPete earlier today ... so my response was, oh duh, no wonder, since i bought the dvd-r's from cvs (the drugstore). no wonder.

hope that clears your confusion -- i've posted to this discussion a few times, and you've replied a few times to me too -- ??

It confused me too, lol.

If you haven't ordered yet, try meritline, they usually run between .40 and .47 ea/w free shipping.

That's for branded ritek G04. make sure your riteks are branded.

Good luck...

Ok, I burned one dvd just fine. The next one I put in I used the exact same media and everything but when i hit "backup" it starts to encryp then gives me an error saying that an "exception occured" and then under it says "invalid handle" then other "exception occured" and then DVD Shrink closes. I tried re-burning the first dvd i did and again it works just fine. Anything special you have to do with certain types of DVD's?
all help will be gladly appreciated Thanks!

I have just followed the instructions of ScubaPete on how to backup my DVD movies, using DVD Shrink & DVD Decrypter and to be honest I was dubious to say the least, but I was amazed how easy it was and even more so on the quality of the backup. So thanks for taking the time to explain in detail...!

Actually when you "know" what to do, that holds true for most apps including Nero, which BTW, I consider one of the best all around suites out there..

In fact shrink 3.2 can also use Copy 2 dvd to burn, or nero or decrypter, has better quality than dvd2one with the new settings and it's free. :)

elvin,
I agree that whatever works for you is what matters, but that wasn't what you stated til now.

You stated that:
1)nero is a load of rubbish, not true. nero is an entire suite of apps including cover design, PC backup, audio apps, file conversion, burning engine, menu construction, toolkit and much more. Comparing it to dvd2one is apples to oranges.

2)not everybody has to use shrink or nero, I never said they did, I have many apps that I use depending on the situation. I would never say use one way to backup and that's it.

Actually some people prefer quality over ease.

RB/CCE, Intervideo dvdcopy2,Pinnacle IC8,shrink 3.2,all have better quality than dvd2one. In fact we tested the new dvd2one 1.5 during the shrink 3.2 beta days before it was released against all these apps and it came in last on almost every test.

I have dvd2one and it has it's uses too, it is good for combining two dvds onto one disc and it is a basically good program. The new 1.5 is superior to the old 1.4. I just pointed out that Nero is also a good app and so is Shrink which is free.

In the end, you are correct though, whatever makes you happy is really what it's all about. :)

Well I posted earlier, but I deleted what I wrote because I think I answered my question. I have a new Dell computer and I ran Partition Magic 8.0, and unless my eyes are deceiving me, apparently I have my hard drive already in NTFS. Also since I successfully burned a dvd on a + disk with a Sony (which most of you have poo-pooed) and had success, it seems maybe my only problem was that I listened to some stranger at a computer store and bought DVD-Rs as opposed to DVD+Rs. I think I'll check out these Riteks GO4s that were recommended at meritline. Unless you guys shout a warning out to me I'll let you know how it goes. Thx a ton for all of your consideration and time helping those of us out of the tech loop. Cheers.

Ok I do need a little bit of last minute advice on which dvds to buy. I've heard branded Ritek GO4s mentioned. I just visited Meritline and here's what I found for Ritek:

Ritek Ridata (Ridata branded) 4x DVD+R (low as .44 each)

Ritek Ridata (Silver Matte) 4x DVD+R (low as .58 each)

Ritek Ridata (Silver Shiny) 4x DVD+R (low as .62 each)

Ritek Ridata (White Inkjet Printable) 4x DVD+R (low as .65 each)

Which one of these would you, the experts, recommend or should I try another kind? I figured I'd be annoying and double check before buying as I already am out $20 for the stack of DVD-Rs (err... coasters) that I bought the other day. I'll stop harassing you gentlemen very soon, I promise.

jwhyrock,

I use + and -, the only thing you need to look out for is your player compatibility. I only say make sure they are branded and I recommend the G04. Inexpensive and extremely reliable.

Well I'm sure I'm good with + and apparently bad with - so that's out of the way. Everyone had said Ritek branded, and the one I found said Ritek "Ridata" branded. I was just double checking. Also I didn't see any mention of G04, so if you like that one maybe you could point me in the right direction.
