Here is my situation. I have 2 computers and 2 DVD
writers. Both are HP420i models and both purchased with
in a month of each other. Both computers are 2.0 GHZ
intel models, both run windows XP home and both have 512
meg of PC2700. Now both run Nero 6.3 ultra and I have
burned a Verbatim DVD+R in each one. Both say they
are burning at 4x YET it takes one computer about 15
minutes to burn a full DVD and it takes the other about
32 minutes to burn a DVD. Any suggestions what might
be wrong. I am totally puzzled. Thanks VATSIM5

Were you using the same original as the test dvd?? The length of the original will cause the time to be different. I can rip and burn a dvd5 original in about 15-20 minutes. A dvd9 original takes twice as long.

Thanks for the reply. They were the same files that I
had on both computers. Total about 4.15 GIG. Why would
they say they are both burning at 4x speed when one
takes twice as long? Sorry I am just new to this DVD
burning. They were a mix. Some were MP3s some were
MPEG and some were AVI files. Really confusing. Not
sure what DVD9 is.

Sorry for not explaining. DVD 5 are single layer dvds and blanks with less than 5 gig of storage. DVD 9 are dual layer dvds with a capacity of I think 8.4 gig. If both computers are identical and programs and original dvd's are the same, the time difference must be something being overlooked or possibly a slight diference in the way something internal was manufactured. Can't think of any other reason.

Did you defrag the hard drive on the machine with the slower burns? A badly fragmented hard drive can slow down read access a lot.

Are you running anything in the background that could slow down your burner?

I will check and see what settings might be different.
I just can't understand why Nero says the are burning
at 4x speed on both computers but one takes 15 minutes
and the other, burning the same files on the same media
takes twice as long. Almost seems that one is really
burning at 2x but is being shown as burning 4x. I'll
see what I can dig up and let you know. Thanks again for
your help.

Sorry I cant answer your main question.But a dvd9 is a a double layer (8.5 GB)dvdr vs. dvd5 (4.7 GB) dvdr With one gig being calculated as 1,000mb when a gig is actually 1024mb (so actual usable disk space is a little less than 8.5 or 4.7 visit the glossary here http://www.afterdawn.com/glossary/
