I want to back-up my DVD collection. I want to make a byte to byte copy (not video capturing or compression) of the original DVD that will play in my home player. Anyone know how to do this? My understanding is I need to purchase a DVD burner (which burner?) modify the drive so it can read into the lead area of the DVD where the CSS code is stored and copy it to my hard drive, then back onto a blank DVD (which media? DVD-r/w , DVD-r, DVD+r/w). Thanks.

Sorry, currently there is no method for backing up 1:1 your DVDs, since DVD-Video discs can and normally do contain 9GB of data (GB not in terms of computers, but billions of bytes, not multiplies of 2 like in PC world) per side and DVD-Rs only can hold half of that (4.7GB or 4.36 "real" gigabytes).

Normal method of backing up using DVD-Rs is this:

-you rip just the movie part to your HDD. If it is under 4.36GB, you're good to go and just burn the movie to DVD-R
-if the clip is slightly above 4.36GB, like 5.00GB, you can try Vobrator and IFOEdit to get rid of unnecessary data, like Spanish audio, stereo audio, German subtitles, etc and just leave the movie and 5.1 DTS English audio left and see if it fits to 4.36GB after that. If so, just burn it.
-if the trick above doesn't help, one option is to split the main movie to 2 discs using IFOEdit, etc tools

In any case, you normally need to sacrifice your DVD extras.

You need DVD-/+R(W) burner (DVD-RAM doesn't work with stand-alone players -- DVD-R, DVD-RW and DVD+RW do) and some DVD burning software like Ahead's Nero.

Actually, you can, but u'll need to pay extra for a Double sided DVD, and that will get u the 9 Gigs if needed

Which is basically the same as splitting the movie to two DVD-Rs since flippers need "work" from you when the side ends.

I have an almost identical question. I need to split a 7.5Gb DVD movie onto 2 DVD-R's using a Pioneer A03 drive. So far i've ripped the movie to my hard drive and have 8 VOB files, 7 of which are 1Gb and the last one 196Mb. I also have a VIDEO_TS.IFO file and VTS_01_0.IFO files. How do remaster that to 2 discs?? What is IFOEdit if that does the job and any idea where I can get it from?

Thanks

hedger: Solution comes from "The Video Site" a.k.a. doom9:

or if you want to preserve menus, etc:

I have a question.
Is it possible to write an mpeg video file to dvd without any further converting? As you are aware, normally a full movie in vcd format takes up 2/3 cds. Is it possible to write the three disks to one dvd?

"I've been dead once already and it's very liberating......." Who said this?
