DVD-R burn problems - Help!

I have read many excellent posts on this forum, which have provided me many changes and settings to verify. I have tried all suggestions I found relevant, as well as purcahsing a new Plextor 712-A burner, but I still burn most of my disks bad. Some turn out though. I have been trying to resolve this for over a month. I have ran out of things to try, so I am posting this to request help.
I am reading and burning exclusively from a Plextor 712-A burner. I am using DVD Decryptor to rip files to my hardrive. I am using DVD Shrink and Nero to burn new DVD. I am using RitekG05 (8X -R) disks exclusively. I have the latest firmware for the Plextor 1.04, version 3.5.1.0 of Decryptor, version 3.2.0.15 of DVD Shrink. My system is an AMD Athlon 2.8 GHz, 160 Gig HD, running XP Pro with service pack 2. Following are the logs from my latest bad burn using Decryptor and Shrink and movie DVD The Green Mile.

Have you tried unplugging your liteon dvd burner? And why are you burning at 2x?

I am trying your suggestion an unplugging my liteon burner. I am also defragging my hard drive. I will then try to copy a disk and see what the results are. As for the 2X, I set a setting for maximum burn speed, but it is trying to burn only at 2x now. It has burned at 8X before, and some were even good. I purchased a matched pair of LietOn SOHW-812-S burners to replace my original dvd rom and burner after I became aware of burn problems. I was originally using DVD XCopy Platinum and Express. I never received any errors however when I went to watch many of the movies they would freeze up and stop playing. Through this forum I learned about media quality and switched to Ritech G05 (8X -R) disks. I continued to have problems so I sparng for the cadillac Plextor. I also started using DVD Decrypter and DVD Shrink because of the better logging they provide. Further, I am using PlexTools(KProbe Equivalent product for Plextor drives) to analyze all my burns. What I know to date is; Using all Ritek media, using only Plextor 712-A drive, using DVD Decrypter, all disks copy to hard drive with no indicated errors. I also have watched some of the movies from my hard drive using PowerDVD and the movies play fine. Analyzing the burns of these same files made with DVD Shrink, I find most are bad, and even some that check out with PlexTools later will freeze and not play. I have replaced the IDE cable with a new round cable and added an extra fan to eliminate any heat issues (also currently have the side of the tower removed for quick access!). DMA settings are verfied. The problem definitely seems to be with the burn, however I am using good media, great burner, and good software. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Also, definetly defrag your HD and try to remove the liteon burner.
Did you install Nero's InCD4? If you remove it: control panel -> add/remove programs
I also want to to install a aspi layer:
http://forceaspi18.w.interia.pl/
Instructions on the site. Download both Force 1.8 and ASPI Check. I run KILLASPI then INSTASPI, reboot then run aspi check. All dll's should read 4.71.2
Also un-install your plextor, reboot and let XP re-install it. Then make sure your firmware is up to date for your burner.

An odd problem for sure. I think it could be more on the operating system side and not the hardware side. Did you have any tasks running in the background, like packet writing software?

Yes, with XCopy express I was never receiving any errors, however when I would try to watch the movies later on my Toshiba DVD player attached to my TV, they would freeze and stop playing in various places usually on the second half of the disk. Some were good and played. This is when I read up on this forum and switched media. When that did not help I purchased a matched pair of LiteOn SOHW-812S burners. I also began using KProbe to check my burns and found most were bad. Some information not shown in the logs, I am currently using an expired demo version of Nero 6, I have XCOPY Platinume 4.0.3.8 inbstalled, also Roxio easy media 7 with drag to disc uninstalled. I had used ForceASPI to install aspi layer, then I read a post that said this was not needed for XP as it used SPTI. Is ASPI better or more reliable? I am willing to follow any considered advice to resolve my issues. I realize I am asking for a lot of detailed help, but if you can provide a list of items in order that you would recommend I would greatly appreciate it. Thanks.

I also am making sure that I am running no other applications at the time of the burn, surfing, etc... I do have MS Instant messenger, Norton Internet Security (have DSL connection), and Norton anti-virus (disabled), running in background.

I would install an aspi layer. Also toshiba players aren't that compatible with most media. There have been a couple threads about toshiba standalone players.

Yes, I had read about Toshiba being picky, so I tried playing my burns back on my computer using PowerDVD. I found that all of the burned disks that would not play on my Toshiba, would also not play (freeze up somewhere in playback) from my burner using PowerDVD. I am following you advice and installing ASPI layer, defragging hard drive, uninstalling LITEOn burner(removed cable and power), uninstalling Plextor burner, then rebooting. Will then verify ASPI layer, DMA setting on Plextor and try new burn. Thanks for all the help, I will post my results tomorrow.

You got a great hardware set-up, so there shouldn't be any problem with the burning under normal circumstances. I would offer two minor suggestions:
1) It has been said that XP service pack 2 has compatibility problems with many software products. Have you checked with Microsoft or tried to remove service pack 2? 2) My personal experience regarding burning has been that Nero + DVD43 offer the most reliable results (esp. at low speed).

It sounds like you are attempting to work through your problem using some of the
fine posts out there. However, I have not heard someone mention that you
might want to reinstall your O/S. I do not like to tell someone to do this, due to
the time tfactor involved.
Oh, in the event you are using XP. SP-2 does not like other
firewalls. I would not install nortons firewall. I have had to fix
a person that had nortons firewall and SP2 on there system.
There system had some odd software issues.
As an after thought, make sure you have no spyware on your PC. I would
use AdAware. Its free and works better then most.

I have defragged my drive and installed ASPI layer. Following is the defrag disk info and the aspi check. Per a previous post, I should see all four values the same, however I see only 2. Is this a problem?

Ok ... looks good so far. I need you to check one more thing before you start backing up. You've got Nero .. You need to see if you installed InCD4.
Control Panel -> add/remove programs -> look for Ahead InCD4 or just InCD4. If you see it, Remove It.
You don't have Roxio also do you?

Alright, to be on the safe side ... re-install both Shrink and Decrypter.
Now you only have the Plextor installed, right?
Simple steps ... you can do the extras in Shrink later.
1) Open Shrink, then open disc
2) Click "backup"
3) Change the target destination to "ISO Image File" ... I don't want you to auto burn with Decrypter
4) Under the Quality settings tab, check the box to "Perform deep analysis"
5) Click ok.
Once Shrink is done, close that window.
Now:
1) Open DVD Decrypter
2) Click mode, then ISO Write W
3) Browse for the ISO image Shrink created, by default Shrink puts it in your local disk
4) Lower right corner, change the burn speed to 4x or 2.4x
5) Click Burn
Run no other programs during either process ... even internet. Only run Shrink, then Decrypter
Hope it comes out. Also can test it on your pc first,make sure it doesn't skip/freeze. If your toshiba doesn't play it, try to test on another standalone if you can.

I tried your suggestions last night and Shrink gave an error about not being able to read disk, so I used Decryptor to copy to ISO on hardrive and Shrink to burn to disk. Received errors to the effect Plector said Queue again later, session fixation error, then ended. Got discouraged and went to bed!
Today I tried the following, uninstalled NVidia IDE driver, Plextor Drive, rebotted, let Windows reeinstall. Then disable some uneccesary Services, IMAPI, Indexing, InternetConnection/Firewall connection sharing, Terminal Services, Windows Time, Remote desktop Help Session Manager, Task Scheduler. I also disonnected my DSL connection, and disable Norton Internet Security, Norton AntiVirus, Windows update, Instant messenger etc.. Then I rebooted and tried to burn again.
This time Shrink did open the disk, did ISO write to HD with Deep Analysis, took 38 minutes. Then used Decrypter to write ISO file to Ritek 8X -R at 4X. Although the PlexTools PI/PO test had 25,785 PIF errors usimg Sum1, there were no POF's, and the disk will likely play. I received one of my Ritek disks back today from a friend who copied a movie for me on his TDK 8X burner. PlexTools analysis of it shows more errors than the disk I just burned, over 100,000 PIF and 95 POF before stopping. Now I am wondering if my Ritek Ridata Branded 8X-R matte silver disks are any good. I just ordered 100 Ritek Ridata 8X +R, since I have been wasting so many. Tomorrow I am going to buy some good quality 4X +R RW and try burn again. If anyone has any other suggestions, I would appreciate hearing them. Thanks. I also have the Plextor 712-A and have been burning dvds perfectley. The cds i have are rated at 4x though. I think the problem might be with the Ritek cds because i have read alot of info on blank dvd's and have read post about people that have had errors on their cds when they use ritec.
Also if your burning dvds, why are doing such a complicated process.All you need is two programs, AnyDVD, which will take the css encryption of the DVD's you buy in the store, and then Intervideo DVDCopy 2, which is so simple, that you just press one button and it does all the transcoding and burning for you.

I noticed you have upgraded XP w/SP2. When I had SP2 on my machine the Security proggy with XP kept trying to start my virus software even tho I had disabled it. It would continually try and was causing write errors. I'm not sure if this has anything to do with your problem, but I had to uninstall SP2. Might be something else to look at. BTW,, I wouldn't listen to King505,, Most people here enjoy good success using Ritek/Ridata GO4's and GO5's

It's because they are free. If you can't get DVD Shrink and DVD Decrypter to work ... then it's not the software.

Try to swap the Plextor with the lite-on. Try to burn with the lite-on at 4x.

I learned a lot from you flip. Are you still at 4X on all recordings? I have the same drive as he does the Liteon SOHW 812S and love it. I am also using the same Riteks but after up grading my firmware I still could not record at 8X so went back to 4X as you suggested even though it doesnt seem to have any problems at 6X I still do it at 4X and no more problems. I also use a Toshiba SD 3950 playback unit. One coaster out of a little over a hundred backups is not bad huh? Seems as how a lot of peoples problems is the race to make it record faster..

I burned 2 movies tonight at the same settings I used previously, using Decrytper and Shrink, 4X burn, however I used Verbatim DVD+RW disks. The PlexTools analysis of the burns indicate these are both excellent burns. I will try 2 more tomorrow to validate this issue is resolved.
I realize I am being very long winded, but I want to let Flip218 especially, and all of the many other people who have responded to this post, or posted other messages of value to resolving these problems, that I am very gratefull for the assistance. For personal reasons, being able to peform good burns as soon as possible is of more importance to me than the average person. I will post tomorrow afetr burning more to validate issue is resolved. Irregardless of resolution, I would like to thank all for the assistance provided! Thank You!

I have a Plextor 708-A. I had it in an old P111 system and it worked with no problems. I have since built a system arounf an AMD64 3200+ CPU an MSI K8N Neo Mobo and a WD Raptor. When I first installed XP I did not install the SATA drivers I let XP install the built in xp ones. Again I had no problems. Since I have re-installed XP(using F6/SDTA drivers) and installed the NForce IDE drivers, and now have problems with my plextor. Plexitools does not work properely, no information is supplied under "Drive Information" and in "General Information" the firmware version is not displayed. Having thralled the net I have come across many sugestions that some DVD burners(esp Plextor's) have problems with the NForce IDE drivers. I am still looking into this before I do yet another re-install but it might be related to your problem. BTW I have just installed SP2 and it has made no difference regarding the Plextor one way or the other.
Addittion: One other thing my Plextor also will only burn at 2.4(3312 KB/s), however I was led to believe that windows was responsible for this, it had a cap of 2.4. Any ideas guys!

Has your Px-708 ever worked correctly in this new PC?
I have a PX-708 under windows XP Pro (SP2) and had no issues at all with it in terms of burn speed. Could this problem be related to your mother board's chipset drivers?
