My backup is still crashing after following what adonia did (Burning to read and 1X speed). I've been messing with this disk all week. I got it to work one time, then was not able to get it to burn again. I've used 321 Express, DVD Decrypter,DVD Shrink, and I have DVD43 autoloading. Do we have any experts that have any tricks to try. Is it possible to copy the 1 good copy that I have? Any help would be appreciated.

Use DVDdecypter only and turn off DVD43. Use the latest Decrypter. Set for 1x read then see if the log shows it reading at 1x or does it revert to a higher speed.
Are you using your burner to read or a DVD rom. If you use a DVD rom then rip at 1x with your burner. It may read what the DVDrom wouldn't.

Thanks to everybody with advice. After following everyones directions/suggestion, I was able to FINALLY burn a copy of ANH. I've only been working on it since it was released.

Many Many Thanks!

For DVDDecrypter: Go to Tool->Settings and click on I/O
tab. Check-Ignore Read Errors box. Change-Software Read
Errors retries to 1 and Software Write Errors retries to 1. Then click Device tab and check Read Speed box, change Read Speed to 1x. It'll take about an extra five minutes to get past the glitch which is located when Obi Wan is reaching for the helmet in the Millenium Falcon, but you have to be looking to see it after you burn your copy.

64026402,
If it is a copyright protection problem, riddle me this. Why do the other disks copy with no problem? I find it hard to believe that Lucas Arts went through the trouble of using different copy protection methods on the same release of a series of movies. Im not saying its not possible but not probable. Even the basic XCopy burned the other disks with no bad, unreadable sectors.

It is a known copyright protection. Anydvd has a specific box to check for remove copyright protection based upon bad sectors .

It has also been verified that not all discs have the protection. Entire batches at a store may have them but not at a different store.

Since all the suspect discs play perfectly in a standalone player this would eliminate a defective disc as a problem.

Donald,
I understand what you are saying but "It has also been verified that not all discs have the protection. Entire batches at a store may have them but not at a different store", from a manufacturing standpoint at a macro level it makes no sen$e. Making say every 3rd DVD with protection and the rest don't have it? Or say every other plant that is printing the DVD's is using protection and the rest aren't? It would only drive up costs and no business model would support it. It would be all or nothing. Don't get me wrong I appreciate the advice but I can't buy the whole argument with no supported facts. What is the "Well known" protection that some disks are using and others are not?
With the Audio glitch from this same DVD that Lucas is saying was on purpose (and many don't buy) it tends to point to a possible flaw. Anyway it a moot point now anyway.
Thanks again for the advice!! Cheers..

I hate lucas had to return the box set 3 times before I was abel to get a copy of ANH that would copy correctly with any of the software I have on my PC (Clone DVD,Nero Ultra 6 and anydvd,DVD Shrink,DVD2One and PinnacleInstant Copy.)

Artificial intelligence is no match for natural stupidity.

I had no problem with Episodes IV and V, but get that error at the end of trying to backup Episode VI... Also weird was that that was the only disc that didn't ask if I wanted to install that program, but just started playing!

Would a different copy do the trick do you think?

I don't have any advice, but figured I should mention that I had no problem burning A New Hope. Burned it last night, didn't even know until this morning that others were having problems.

If it helps for others to know... I was using DVD-Shrink 3.2, set to create an ISO and then burn using DVD-Decrypter. I would have paid more attention to the settings I used if I had known there were issues.

I did strip off all French language options, but left all the others. Like another person in this thread, I too could not pull up the Spanish subtitles on my successful copy.

One of those programs (don't remember which one) asked for me to "guess" the region code so that it could properly decode it - which I told it was "1".

I had had a problem copying another movie just before, and had un-checked "Burn-Proof". Wonder if that had anything to do with the success. Burn-Proof is intended to get around buffer overrun errors on slower machines.

Which also makes me wonder... does everyone out there have the same specs on their machines - perhaps that 2/3 who have no problems are simply getting around the flaw because their machines have the processng power / RAM to deal with it.

I followed jurelex' advise and ripped the DVD with DVD Decrypter, ISO mode. It didn't work (encryption error on a sector) on one computer with the Liteon LTD163 drive, but it worked fine on the laptop HL-DT-ST GCC-4240N drive, and the external Sony DRX500A also, without any error at all. DVD Shrink then opened the image file (ISO) ripped from DVD Decrypter and finally Nero to burn the back up and the backed up DVD works fine without any glitch. This encrypted sector seems to be pronounced only with the Liteon drive.

Hello. I had posted a few weeks ago about having problems copying A New Hope. I followed the directions of someone in this thread. I used DVD Decrypter in Read mode to create my ISO. I then took the ISO into DVD Shrink 3.2 and reduced the file size. After I had the reduced size ISO, I burned it using DVD Decrypter. It works great!

Also I found out that the XBOX only reads DVD - R and not DVD +R discs.

I have been using my XBOX for my DVD player but I am going to change that soon. It's just to damn picky.

Also, from further testing, I found that this encrypted sector issue affects some DVD drives more than others. I have 3 drives at home that have been ripping backups for a long time without any glitch.

However, with the same ANH DVD, one drive doesn't work at all, one drive only works with the ISO mode and not with the File mode. The Sony DVD burner drive 500X works perfectly with both modes, ISO and File.

I had similar problems. I use Shrink -> Nero with no problems on ANH and ESB. However, on Jedi; I get this same erro everytime when it initially analyzes...

I want to remind people who have spend a lot of time, like me, unsucessfully trying the various suggestions in this thread to backup "Star Wars IV", of a WIN XP quirk - namely, if you get too many READ errors, WIN XP, in its great wisdom, will decide to change your IDE channel settings from the DMA mode to the PIO mode without telling you.

You notice this change later when you are backing up some other title, and the read process is suddenly just taking forever. With my hardware/software setup, Shrink or Decrypter simply freeze after a bit when in the PIO mode.

The only solution I know of is to uninstall your primary and/or secondary IDE channels, and reboot. WIN XP will then reinstall the IDE channels in the DMA mode, and re-recognize your optical drives. This WIN XP feature of automatic changes is my least favorite WIN XP "helper" feature. And by the way, I finally gave up trying to back up "Star Wars IV"...
