Which recordable DVD format works best in older DVD players?

I'm considering buying a DVD recorder and have a question. Between DVD-R and DVD+R, which one works for older DVD players, or will either one work? Thanks!

-R has the edge when it comes to older players. Here's a link where you can search specific model players and check out their likes/dislikes media wise :)
