im using both a pentuim 4 2.8 g and a pentuim 2 350 with 128m ram both with a lg dual layer dvd burner.
it takes around 6 hours to rip and burn a dvd.
p.s im allso trying to burn avi's to dvd i tryed it with on dvd but i kept getting a illegal operation error ,but then tryed it with another avi and it burn ok,both avi's can be played normal on my compter,plz if you have any help in that area of things

It's dual layer dude, it's a new technology. New stuff is sloooooooooow to the core. I'm sure there's some tweak somewhere that might up your speed a bit, but "the bottleneck" isn't your processor, it's your burner, I'm guessing it's not much higher than 4x if that, and burning a dual layer disc is gonna take awhile. Sorry I can't help....and you're welcome.

What are you talking about ... all (s)he said was, they are using a lg dual layer dvd burner ... doesn't mean they are using dual layer media.
Dual layer burners are more than capable of burning the regular single layer media. And dual layer media is 2.4x media ... so it shouldn't take more than 40-45 min to burn the disc. And to rip a DVD-9 shouldn't take more that 15-20 min on a good system.

For one ... 128mb of ram isn't alot, especially for backing up dvd's. And there is seriously something wrong if it takes you 6 hours to rip and burn on you P4 system.
Why don't you post full system specs for both computers? Also what programs are you using? And what brand of media? And are you using dual layer media?

first off thanks all for ya help,it's god to find ppl willin to help.
ok my first system is a pentuim 4 2.8mhz with 512 ram and 120g hdd,but i dont use it for dvd's.
my 2nd is a pentuim 2 350mhz with 128mb ram and a 40g hdd in which i use for dvd's.
p.s im using single layer disc's

id get some more ram for your encoding computer, or use your up spec one.
Also pay to check if your drives are running in PIO or DMA mode (you want them in DMA)

That's why it takes 6 hours to rip and burn. If you would use the P4 system then it would probably take about(here comes a guess) 1-1 1/2 hours for a dvd. Of course this all depends on what programs you're using and the options you choose.
